The Teacher Research Fellows Program offers teachers in the TST region the opportunity to pursue action research projects with guidance from mentors. This year's cohort will meet 4:00-6:00pm on the TST campus on: Sept. 19, Oct. 10, Nov. 7, Dec. 5, Jan. 9, Feb. 6, March 5, April 16, May 7, and June 4.

The registration fee for this program is $750 per person.

2. Cognitive Coaching Foundations Course

Cognitive Coaching℠ is built on the belief that teaching is a professional act and Coaches support teachers in becoming more resourceful. Stephanie Burt Pelcher of Thinking Collaborative will lead Administrators and Instructional staff through an 8 day Foundations Course that includes professional training and coaching.

Participants learn how to:
● develop trust and rapport
● develop an identity as a mediator of thinking
● utilize conversation structures for planning, reflecting and problem-solving
● develop teachers' autonomy and sense of community
● develop higher levels of efficacy, consciousness, craftsmanship, flexibility, and interdependence
● apply four support functions: coaching, evaluating, consulting, collaborating
● utilize the coaching tools of pausing, paraphrasing, and posing questions
● distinguish among the five forms of feedback
● use data to mediate thinking

This series begins January 17, with live sessions via Zoom two times a month from January-April, 2024. Live session dates will be scheduled upon registration for the series.

Peter Liljedahl's Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics has been generating extraordinary excitement and enthusiasm among educators for its innovative recommendations to move students from studenting to thinking. This network is designed to connect teachers who are interested in collaborating, troubleshooting, and sharing best practices regarding the implementation of Liljedahl's 14 practices. Whether you've read the book and have already started to build your own thinking classroom or you're simply interested in learning more, you're welcome to join the conversation. Copies of the text can be purchased through BOCES, if needed.
The meeting dates for this network are 11/14/23, 12/19/23, 1/23/24, 2/27/24, 3/26/24, 4/23/24, 5/21/24, and 6/18/24. Feel free to register for any/all of these dates.

5. Educational Advisors: Culture Kit Development with the Einaudi Center for International Studies

Educational Advisors will be paired with 1-2 groups of Cornell students and faculty, who are responsible for updating one culture kit within a specific world area (Africa, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia). They will advise on updates based on how they think their assigned kit could best be used in the classroom with various subjects and grade levels, and how they could best tie in with the NYS Social Studies Framework and other state standards.

The Educational Advisors will be asked to attend 3 synchronous meetings outside of the school day (to be scheduled with each participant) as well as devote up to 10 asynchronous hours in developing their project. Additional CTLE hours may be available to participants who engage in more than one kit project.

6. THRIVE: Self-Paced Virtual Course from Empowered Educator

Do you serve students with multiple disabilities? Join us as we bring together teachers and related service providers to connect and take a interdisciplinary dive into how to collaboratively meet the needs of students with multiple disabilities. At each meeting, teachers and therapists will have time to connect to each other but also break into specialized groups. Our goal is to learn, plan and brainstorm how we can use individual expertise to best meet the complex medical, physical, emotional, communication, and academic needs of some very special students.

The purpose of the Regional Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment Council is first to provide direction relating to the utilization of TST BOCES' RSS services, including oversight and agenda guidance for all regional content networks and councils. Second, the CIA Council exists to support teachers and administrators with best practices related to curriculum, instruction and assessment to promote equitable academic achievement. CIA Council meetings will include updates on NYSED initiatives and local professional learning activities, as well as the opportunity to network with other administrators from around the region.

An optional "lunch and learn" session will precede each meeting from 1:15-2:00. This additional time will provide a structured opportunity for participants to look over the agenda and linked resources while networking informally with colleagues. There is no fee for this activity.

The end of the year is rapidly approaching and we would like to offer new and experienced teachers the opportunity to reflect on their school year. Participants will be paired with a trained Cognitive Coach to collaboratively explore challenges and successes, and to engage in future planning. Through a series of guided conversations participants can expect opportunities to gain new insights on any aspect of their professional practice and identify personal action steps for their growth as an educator. Individual meeting times and locations for up to 3 hours of coaching will be determined between the participant and the coach. This program with legal specialist Perry A. Zirkel (perryzirkel.com) consists of two successive half-day sessions. The morning session focuses on recent issues under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), including a year in review update of court decisions in New York, the Second Circuit, and nationally that are relevant to K1/412 educators. The afternoon session focuses on recent student issues under Section 504 and the Americans with Disabilities Act, including recommended forms and procedures for appropriately determining eligibility and services for "504-only" students, i.e., those who qualify for 504 plans, not IDEA IEPs. Teachers, supervisors, and administrators in both special education and general education will benefit from both sessions for more effective coordination and compliance within each school district.

Mostly, the focus of attention on artificial intelligence is on what it can do. But how does it work? How do machines learn? In this hands-on activity, we will remove the computer to understand how an algorithm can improve at a task, and through this unplugged experience, gain a better understanding of the fundamental principles of artificial intelligence. This activity can be adapted to students in any 4-12 math, science, or CS course.

This professional development and networking opportunity provides early childhood professionals with the quality and innovative resources needed to rejuvenate their classrooms, programs, and centers. In addition, the Annual Conference serves as a catalyst to refuel and re-energize the professional for the work ahead. The conference offers over 115 workshops, three keynote session, and all-day intensive workshop opportunities. Bring together those impacted to resolve conflict. Incidents of conflict, wrongdoing, and harm occur everywhere, every day in schools, workplaces, college campuses, neighborhoods, and families. The restorative justice conference provides a way to engage with those who cause and experience harm, along with the related community. Restorative Justice Conferencing covers the fundamentals of facilitating a formal conference in response to an incident of wrongdoing or harm. You will then be able to utilize those skills to create deeper interpersonal understanding and repair relationships among those involved or affected by such an incident. The strategies in this workshop will be focused on supporting elementary and middle school students with moderate to severe disabilities. but can be adapted and applied in all K-12 environments. The Writing Revolution (TWR) provides a clear method of instruction that you can use no matter what subject or grade level you teach. The model has demonstrated, over and over, that it can turn weak writers into strong communicators by focusing on specific techniques that match their needs and by providing them with targeted feedback. As much a method of teaching content as it is a method of teaching writing, there's no separate writing block and no separate writing curriculum. Instead, teachers of all subjects adapt the TWR strategies and activities to their current curriculum and weave them into their content instruction.

The purpose of the Regional Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment Council is first to provide direction relating to the utilization of TST BOCES' RSS services, including oversight and agenda guidance for all regional content networks and councils. Second, the CIA Council exists to support teachers and administrators with best practices related to curriculum, instruction and assessment to promote equitable academic achievement. CIA Council meetings will include updates on NYSED initiatives and local professional learning activities, as well as the opportunity to network with other administrators from around the region.

An optional "lunch and learn" session will precede each meeting from 1:15-2:00. This additional time will provide a structured opportunity for participants to look over the agenda and linked resources while networking informally with colleagues. There is no fee for this activity.

Participants will be paired with a trained Cognitive Coach to collaboratively explore challenges and successes, and to engage in future planning. Through a series of guided conversations participants can expect opportunities to gain new insights on any aspect of their professional practice and identify personal action steps for their growth as an educator. Individual meeting times and locations for up to 3 hours of coaching will be determined between the participant and the coach. It's time for "Redesign Your Mind Summer Camp!" ... Because learning the tools to feel empowered every day gets to be fun!

This 12-week online group program will teach you how to transform yourself to actually become the Empowered Educator you've always imagined. Learners will leave Summer Camp with a toolkit of social/emotional practices grounded in cognitive neuroscience, trauma-informed practices to be implemented in the classroom, a deep understanding of effective communication for building relationships and handling conflict, and mastery of the SEL benchmarks outlined by CASEL. The program includes 12 online "campfire" sessions, 5 synchronous virtual group coaching sessions, access to the Empowered Educator library of materials, and more! Synchronous sessions will be held on Mondays from 7pm-8:30pm.

The workshop will address how teaching climate change satisfies state standards in a range of ways, and includes attention to teaching climate across the curriculum. Each of the three days will have a theme with demonstration lessons and associated resources tied to the theme. Day 1 will focus upon climate and climate change; Day 2 will focus on energy, energy history, and our energy future; and Day 3 will address resilience and communication. The agenda will draw from our updated Teacher-Friendly Guide to Climate Change, and the workshop is led by the four authors of the guide (Ingrid Zabel, Don Haas, Rob Ross, and Alexandra Moore) along with Cornell climate scientist, Toby Ault. We will share a wide range of resources and strategies, on our Earth@Home site. The resources have been largely developed with funding from the National Science Foundation.
