In response to district requests, Nassau BOCES is launching a Science of Reading (SoR) Think Tank to support PreK-3 teams in preparing for the upcoming NYSED SoR attestation, due September 1, 2025. Districts are invited to send a 3-4 person team to two in-person sessions on May 28 and June 16. Ahead of the first meeting, teams will complete a self-assessment using the NYSED attestation document to reflect on current literacy practices and identify areas of strength and growth.

This Think Tank will provide dedicated space for districts to reflect, collaborate, and share strategies. Once we're all working from the attestation itself, we'll explore how to navigate it together, including the newly added writing component, and determine district specific next steps. Our goal is to help districts move forward with clarity and confidence while advancing high-quality early literacy instruction across Long Island.

Each and every day, the work of teaching children to read and write is both urgent and joyful. But those of us who lead this work-who guide and grow the teachers who guide and grow our readers and writers-need places to come together. We need to study alongside colleagues who share our vision, to wrestle with challenges, to celebrate progress, and to imagine what's possible.

This series of six Literacy Leadership workshops is designed for just that purpose. Across the 2025-2026 school year, literacy leaders from across Long Island will gather to build a shared vision for powerful, equitable reading, writing, and phonics instruction.

Led by The Reading & Writing Project at Mossflower, each session will blend big-picture thinking with the kinds of nitty-gritty practical tools that you can bring back to your schools right away. Together, we'll study research, analyze student work, rehearse coaching moves, and plan for meaningful professional learning experiences in your districts.

Most of all, this series will offer a community of thought partners-fellow leaders who believe, as you do, in the transformative power of literacy.

    New
K-12 educators everywhere are being asked to administer increasing numbers of reading assessments. All this testing can be time-consuming, requires substantial amounts of paperwork, and impacts the time teachers have available for planning and instruction. Many educators and parents are growing frustrated and wonder if all this testing is really helping our students.

This workshop looks closely at WHY these assessments are used, HOW to select and administer the most time-efficient and valuable assessments, and most importantly to USE the data to make key instructional decisions that can help us provide the best reading instruction to all students. In the same way we expect our physicians to make decisions about our health and wellness by using the best information available, educators must use assessment tools to inform and guide professional decisions regarding students' academic "health and wellness”. But because it's instruction-not testing-that is the most important task of schools, we must select and use reading assessments as efficiently and effectively as possible.

    Learning Targets:

Understand the purpose for collecting data effectively and efficiently within an RTI/MTSS framework and system.

Understand the purpose and basic strategies involved in benchmark/screening, diagnostic, and progress monitoring reading assessments.

Know how to accurately collect, interpret, and use data using oral reading fluency assessments and informal reading inventories.

Interpret data and use it to make decisions about students' instructional needs and to evaluate students' progress.
