SUNY New Paltz, Molloy University, St. Joseph's University, and Nassau BOCES are proud to collaborate on a one-of-a-kind professional learning experience designed for leaders at all levels ready to lead with the Science of Reading in mind.

Across our region, many educators have already engaged in SoR training through SUNY New Paltz microcredentials and related professional learning. With strong instructional foundations now in place, the next step is clear: how do leaders create systems, structures, and conditions that sustain this work?

Over the course of this two-day institute, participants will ground their learning in the Science of Reading and explore effective literacy leadership in practice. We are excited to welcome Dr. Sarah Holbrook, co-creator of the SUNY New Paltz SoR microcredential, Fellow at the Science of Reading Center, and Director of Humanities for the Kingston City School District. She will be joined by distinguished local literacy experts from Molloy University and St. Joseph's University.

Designed for administrators at the building, district, and university levels, literacy leaders, coaches, department chairs, and teacher leaders, this institute will support participants in turning SoR knowledge into effective leadership action. You DO NOT need to have completed the SUNY New Paltz SoR micro-credential to attend.

New
Each and every day, the work of teaching children to read and write is both urgent and joyful. But those of us who lead this work-who guide and grow the teachers who guide and grow our readers and writers-need places to come together. We need to study alongside colleagues who share our vision, to wrestle with challenges, to celebrate progress, and to imagine what's possible.

This series of Literacy Leadership workshops is designed for just that purpose. Across the 2026-2027 school year, literacy leaders from across Long Island will gather to build a shared vision for powerful, equitable reading, writing, and phonics instruction.

Led by The Reading & Writing Project at Mossflower, each session will blend big-picture thinking with the kinds of nitty-gritty practical tools that you can bring back to your schools right away. Together, we'll study research, analyze student work, rehearse coaching moves, and plan for meaningful professional learning experiences in your districts.

Most of all, this series will offer a community of thought partners-fellow leaders who believe, as you do, in the transformative power of literacy.

Audience: Math Teachers

Dates: 9/11/2026

What if your students were doing more of the thinking than you are? In this hands-on workshop, we'll explore how to redesign your STEM classroom so that students are active participants in their own learning, not passive recipients of yours. Discovery-based, student-centered instruction is about doing the work before students walk through the door so the magic can happen once they do. The payoff: when students have the structures and agency to drive their own learning, you're not adding to your workload: you're reducing it. Less reteaching. More engagement. Less carrying the cognitive load for the entire room. We'll dig into how your warm-up and exit ticket can become engines for student discovery, why letting students wrestle with content before mastering it is a feature rather than a flaw, and how thin slicing and scaffolding let you guide students forward without giving the learning away. In this workshop, you will:
• Explore classroom structures that support discovery-based learning
• Learn how to use warm-ups and exit tickets to promote student inquiry
• Develop your approach to scaffolding and thin slicing
• Walk away with an enhanced or reimagined lesson of your own Come prepared: Bring a lesson or topic you want to make more student-centered. You'll leave with something better than you arrived with.

Session One of our Distinguished Speaker Series.

Before the appearance of ChatGPT, conventional wisdom was that curricular standards should be sequenced into knowledge points and learning objectives, and learning could be measured by assessing students' mastery of those standards. Yet in the remarkably short time since ChatGPT's release, AI's ability has risen to the point where it can outscore most students on those same exams. Many students have started to question why they learn anything at all, if AI can do everything better than they can. At the same time, people are increasingly consumed by entertaining themselves on their phones, entranced by a philosophy which seeks to acquire as much for oneself as possible, in exchange for as little effort as possible.

Dr. Loh will share his observations, gathered from traveling to 100+ cities and giving hundreds of talks per year, about the state of the situation. He will share his predictions on what will happen, and his advice on what kinds of human attributes will be critical to thrive.

Crucially, this talk will not be doom-and-gloom. Society-scale problems look overwhelming, but there is an area (close to mathematics) which solves such problems: game theory. Dr. Loh has a history of inventing solutions to large scale problems. He will discuss the build behind his latest educational invention: a mutually beneficial cooperation between high schoolers who are kind and mathematically clever, and professional actors, teaming up to teach creative problem solving to others, all working together to build a more Thought Full world.

What if the most powerful math manipulative in your classroom wasn't a set of base ten blocks or a bag of counters - but a picture book? What if a single well-chosen story could open the door to a rich mathematical conversation, a hands-on investigation, a moment of genuine wonder - and leave your students begging to do more math? This is not a new idea. It is an ancient one. Human beings have always learned through story. And in the K-2 classroom, where young children are learning to read the world and read the page, picture books are one of the most natural, most joyful, and most underutilized pathways into deep mathematical thinking that we have.

Dr. Nicki Newton has spent years studying and working with schools about the intersection of children's literature and early mathematics, and she brings to this workshop a vast, carefully curated knowledge of the picture book landscape

    What You'll Walk Away With:
●A deep understanding of the research connecting children's literature and early mathematical development
●A framework for selecting high-quality math picture books
    ●An extensively annotated booklist
    ●A before-during-after read-aloud planning framework
    ●Ready-to-use lesson plans
    ●A manipulative pairing guide
●Strategies for using picture books to develop mathematical vocabulary with all learners, with attention to supporting multilingual learners
    ●A cultural responsiveness toolkit
●Tools for extending the picture book experience into math centers, math journals, math talk, and student-created mathematical stories
    ●Much much more!

Participants are asked to please bring their laptops and current lesson plans/curriculum to the session to create materials to use with their own students.

    Participants will learn:
    1. Effective vocabulary, pre reading, during reading, post-reading, DBQ writing, small group and whole class discussion strategies for math, grades 6-12
    2. How to better teach the language of math directions, tasks, and assessments
