Educators are being asked to administer increasing numbers of reading assessments. All this testing is time-consuming, requires substantial paperwork, and impacts time teachers have for planning and instruction. Educators and parents are growing increasingly frustrated, wondering if all this testing is truly benefiting our students.

We'll look closely at WHY these assessments are used, HOW to select and administer the most time-efficient and valuable assessments, and most importantly, to USE data to make key instructional decisions that can help us provide the best reading instruction to all students. In the same way we expect our physicians to make decisions about our health by using the best information available, educators must use assessment tools to inform and guide professional decisions regarding students' academic "health and wellness”. But because it's instruction, not testing, that is the most important task of schools, we must select and use reading assessments as efficiently and effectively as possible.

    Learning Targets:

Understand the purpose for collecting data effectively and efficiently within RTI/MTSS frameworks and systems.

Understand the purpose and basic strategies involved in benchmark/screening, diagnostic, and progress monitoring reading assessments.

Know how to accurately collect, interpret, and use data using oral reading fluency assessments and informal reading inventories.

Interpret data and use it to make decisions about students' instructional needs and to evaluate students' progress.

Gone are the days of providing diverse readers with a one-size-fits-all approach to small group reading. If we look at Scarborough's Rope, the Simple View of Reading, and Active View of Reading, we recognize the complexity of reading acquisition. The range of skills, knowledge, and factors required for proficient reading vary, as does the ease with which readers develop in each of these areas. This reveals a diversity of needs requiring teachers to pull from a variety of content, methods, and lesson structures.

Participants will learn to identify possible "pathways” for diverse small groups, recognizing that there are students with discrete needs in word recognition, language comprehension, active self-regulation, and bridging processes, rather than relying on leveled groupings. Utilizing the reader profiles in the Simple View of Reading, strands of Scarborough's Rope, and categories of the Active View of Reading, we will discuss strategies for addressing the range of skills, knowledge, and factors for reading proficiency.

Please note: Cancellation policy: If a participant has registered for, but is unable to attend, a Nassau BOCES workshop, they are required to drop their workshop registration on Frontline/MLP at least 7 days prior to the start date of the workshop. The science of reading highlights the importance of building strong foundations in phonological awareness, phonics, and word recognition to support reading fluency and comprehension. In the early grades, students who struggle with phonological awareness are at significantly greater risk for reading difficulties, making intentional, explicit instruction essential. This workshop is designed for both K-2 classroom teachers and interventionists who work together to support early literacy development. We will explore how to build automaticity and fluency in word recognition through targeted instruction in phonological awareness and phonics, and how these foundational skills support reading and writing growth. Participants will learn how to effectively use sound walls and word walls to support orthographic mapping and deepen students' understanding of speech-to-print relationships. We'll compare early leveled readers and decodable texts, discussing how each supports the development of fluent reading and how to align their use across classroom and intervention settings. Writing will be used as a lens to assess students' phonological and orthographic development. Together, we'll analyze writing samples to guide instructional planning that is responsive to student needs. You'll leave this session with shared strategies, aligned practices, and practical tools to enhance collaboration between classroom and intervention settings-and to accelerate reading success for all students.
