Location: Nassau BOCES, Robert E. Lupinskie Center - One Merrick Avenue,Westbury, NY (Westbury, NY) - Conf 1, 2, 3

Audience: Directors and Chairs of English, English Teachers

    Dates: 1/26/2026

    Location: Conf 1, 2, 3

THIS SESSION HAS BEEN ADDED TO ACCOMMODATE MORE PARTICIPANTS. It will cover the same content as the January 15 sessions.

The shifts coming to the English Regents in June 2026 are minimal, but they are designed to bring greater clarity, accessibility, and alignment to the Next Generation English Language Arts Learning Standards. This session will bring educators together to take a closer look at the revised materials and begin thinking through what these updates mean for instruction and student support.

We will look closely at the changes in the language of the Performance Level Descriptors (PLDs) and consider what they imply about expectations for student writing and reading. We'll also review smaller shifts in the exam itself, including adjustments to task directions, rubrics, and source types.

    This session will:
    • -Analyze the updated PLD language and what it signals for classroom practice
    • -Identify and discuss the subtle but purposeful exam changes
    • -Offer time for collaboration and questions
    • -Include space to examine any new guidance released by NYSED prior to the session
-Examine and respond to any new guidance released by NYSED Why attend?
This is a chance to come together as a professional community, examine what's changed, and prepare thoughtfully, without overwhelm.

    Audience: Teachers K-2

    Dates: 2/12/2026

    Location: LS 1

The science of reading highlights the importance of building strong foundations in phonological awareness, phonics, and word recognition to support reading fluency and comprehension. In the early grades, students who struggle with phonological awareness are at significantly greater risk for reading difficulties, making intentional, explicit instruction essential. This workshop is designed for both K-2 classroom teachers and interventionists who work together to support early literacy development. We will explore how to build automaticity and fluency in word recognition through targeted instruction in phonological awareness and phonics, and how these foundational skills support reading and writing growth. Participants will learn how to effectively use sound walls and word walls to support orthographic mapping and deepen students' understanding of speech-to-print relationships. We'll compare early leveled readers and decodable texts, discussing how each supports the development of fluent reading and how to align their use across classroom and intervention settings. Writing will be used as a lens to assess students' phonological and orthographic development. Together, we'll analyze writing samples to guide instructional planning that is responsive to student needs. You'll leave this session with shared strategies, aligned practices, and practical tools to enhance collaboration between classroom and intervention settings-and to accelerate reading success for all students.

Equip your students with the skills they need to navigate life's financial challenges while addressing the NYSED Portrait of a Graduate and boosting classroom engagement. In this dynamic, hands-on workshop, you'll discover how to make personal finance an exciting, meaningful part of your curriculum-whether through integration or a stand-alone course.

You'll see how many of the mathematics concepts we already teach, especially in algebra, underpin and give rise to many of financial concepts we want our students to internalize. Don't adopt a checklist style approach to personal finance instruction! Come and see how personal finance instruction can be taught in student-centered, conceptually-focused way. When you bring real-world relevance to classroom learning you students will be engaged and you'll never have students ask, "when are we going to use this in life?”

This workshop is perfect for math and non-math educators alike, as long as you're willing to engage in basic MS-level algebra concepts needed to illustrate fundamental concepts. You'll leave with ready-to-use modules, lesson ideas, a better understanding of the standards, and a deeper understanding of how to empower your students for their academic, personal, and professional futures. No prior financial knowledge is needed-just a passion for making a difference and a willingness to learn new things. Come and we will redefine what financial education can look like in your classroom or school!

For the first time, Dr. Shanahan will be joining us in person at Nassau BOCES, in partnership with McGraw-Hill. Space is limited.

"For generations, teachers have been told to teach reading with texts at students' reading levels rather than grade levels. To not do so was to cause frustration and to disrupt learning; or, at least, that's what we were told. This presentation will examine those claims and will review the research on the matter [...] Then it will turn to the issue of what it means to teach students to comprehend with books they cannot already read well." -Tim Shanahan
