"For generations, teachers have been told to teach reading with texts at students' reading levels rather than grade levels. To not do so was to cause frustration and to disrupt learning; or, at least, that's what we were told. This presentation will examine those claims and will review the research on the matter [...] Then it will turn to the issue of what it means to teach students to comprehend with books they cannot already read well." -Tim Shanahan

For the first time, Dr. Shanahan will be joining us in person at Nassau BOCES, in partnership with McGraw-Hill. Space is limited.

Please note: Cancellation policy: If a participant has registered for, but is unable to attend, a Nassau BOCES workshop, they are required to drop their workshop registration on Frontline/MLP at least 7 days prior to the start date of the workshop. In the event the participant does not cancel within this timeframe, the participant/district will be billed.

Having students to work collaboratively isn't just something you do with your students in isolated moments - it's a culture you cultivate over time. In this newly updated and expanded version of the popular Making Groupwork the Norm workshop, we'll dive deeper into the classroom structures, routines, and mindsets that help collaborative learning thrive in middle and high school classrooms.

Whether you're new to collaborative learning or building on what you learned in the original workshop, this session offers fresh insights grounded in real classroom practice.

    You'll leave with:

    • A refined set of groupwork norms that boost student independence and peer-to-peer accountability

    • New strategies for designing tasks that foster true collaboration - not just cooperation

    • Tools for formative assessment that track individual understanding within group contexts

    • Clear guidance on managing equity, voice, and shared responsibility

    • Ways to use groupwork as a lever for differentiation and deeper learning

We'll also address persistent myths about groupwork, explore common implementation challenges, and share field-tested solutions that work across content areas.
Join us to transform groupwork from an occasional structure into a powerful, everyday practice - and reimagine what students can do when they learn together.

The NYSSLS-based LS: Biology Regents exam has raised the bar for students, presenting challenges well beyond those of the former Living Environment Regents. This exam is designed to meet the expectations of three-dimensional (3D) learning, requiring students not only to acquire scientific knowledge but also to think like scientists and make sense of novel scientific scenarios.

We will take a clear, practical look at New York State's Educational Assessment Strategy and how it can build 3D skills. This approach uses multiple types of assessments to gauge student progress, tailor instruction, identify strengths and weaknesses, and evaluate mastery. We will discuss the student skills needed to break down and understand the LS: Biology clusters on the Regents exam.

Participants will explore how the clusters in the Biology Regents exam are structured and developed, and how they differ from classroom techniques used to assess 3D learning.

    Topics include:

    • -How the Regents exams are based on the NYSSLS and Performance Level Descriptions (PLDs)
    • -The role of assessment as a component of curriculum and instruction
    • -Using AI to construct Regents-style classroom assessments
    • -Reviewing past Regents clusters to demonstrate how they are developed
    • -Strategies to enhance the testing skills necessary to navigate Regents question clusters
    • -Developing a Google Slides presentation to help students practice skills using released clusters
    • -Collaboratively constructing a Regents-style question cluster using PLDs

B.Y.O.D. - Bring a fully charged laptop, iPad, or tablet.

Note: Participants must drop their registration on Frontline/MLP at least 7 days prior. Failure to cancel will result in billing to the participant/district.

We'll examine the ESS Reference Tables through real exam examples to show how students are expected to use them as sense-making tools rather than for simple look-ups.

Participants will explore effective, classroom-ready strategies to strengthen students' test-taking skills and confidence.

    Included:

    • -Identifying how the NYSSLS-based ESS Regents exam assesses students differently than prior exams
    • -How student assessment is a component of curriculum and instruction
    • -Principles of Regents question clusters and how they differ from classroom assessments

Program: Curriculum & Instruction: Regional PD - CoSer 507.530

Location: Nassau BOCES, Robert E. Lupinskie Center - One Merrick Avenue,Westbury, NY (Westbury, NY) - Learning Studio 1

    Dates: 5/14/2026

    Location: Learning Studio 1

    New
Adolescent readers face increasing academic demands while gaps in word recognition, vocabulary, background knowledge, and comprehension become more visible and harder to address in secondary schedules. Teachers see the signs: students who can read but struggle with complex texts, understand orally but falter independently, or disengage as texts grow more abstract and discipline-specific. What is often unclear is why students struggle and how instruction can be adjusted realistically for secondary classrooms.

This one-day institute introduces the Simple View of Reading as a practical framework for identifying patterns of reading difficulty in adolescents and aligning instruction and support. The focus is not on labeling or "diagnosing,” but on helping educators across content areas understand disciplinary reading demands and the learners in front of them. Participants will examine how word recognition and language comprehension challenges appear in secondary settings and how targeted instruction and intervention can fit within existing schedules and expectations.

    Participants will:
*Build a shared understanding of how reading challenges present in adolescents
*Use the Simple View of Reading to identify patterns of student need
*Explore instructional responses for word-level, language-level, and combined challenges
*Examine vocabulary and comprehension practices embedded into content instruction
*Identify support structures feasible within secondary schedules
*Strengthen alignment between classroom instruction and additional supports

Through hands-on tasks and guided discussion, participants will experience how task design, student thinking, and classroom structures interact to foster productive struggle, collaboration, and sense-making. This session is designed for instructional leaders and coaches at any stage of the BTC implementation process.

Whether you are launching a new initiative or seeking to audit and refine existing practices, this session provides a strategic lens for evaluating instructional quality. Newcomers will gain a clear, practical roadmap for district-wide entry, while experienced leaders will discover how rich activities serve as a lever to deepen teacher capacity and ensure classroom shifts are sustained over time.

Participants will leave with concrete examples and practical insights for bridging the gap between theory and everyday instruction, equipped to support a culture where high-leverage tasks make BTC easier for teachers to manage long-term.
