Participants will learn how to effectively use sound walls and word walls to support orthographic mapping and deepen students' understanding of speech-to-print relationships. We'll compare early leveled readers and decodable texts, discussing how each supports the development of fluent reading and how to align their use across classroom and intervention settings. Writing will be used as a lens to assess students' phonological and orthographic development. Together, we'll analyze writing samples to guide instructional planning that is responsive to student needs. You'll leave this session with shared strategies, aligned practices, and practical tools to enhance collaboration between classroom and intervention settings-and to accelerate reading success for all students.

  • 22. Teaching a NYSSLS-Based Biology Course V2

Program: Curriculum & Instruction: Regional PD - CoSer 507.530

Location: Nassau BOCES, George Farber Admin. Center-71 Clinton Road, Garden City (Garden City, NY) - LL-A[map]

    Audience: Biology Teachers, Science Administrators

    Dates: 3/11/2026

    Location: LL-A

This workshop builds on the Fall 2025 "What Now" session and is designed for educators who have transitioned to an NYSSLS-aligned Biology course and are seeking deeper support for curriculum, instruction, and assessment. Version 2 expands the work to focus on curriculum and instructional design, the fundamentals of classroom versus Regents assessment, and the strategic use of AI to support teacher implementation.

Regardless of the curriculum your district uses to meet NYSSLS Biology expectations, we will unpack the why, how, and what behind the instructional shifts. The emphasis is on clarity, purpose, and the rationale for these standards and how they shape coherent science learning across K-12.

NYSSLS raises expectations for both students and educators. Today's learners are expected to learn science by actively engaging in the practices of science: asking questions, developing models, analyzing data, and applying core ideas to real-world phenomena. This work moves beyond memorization toward sense-making grounded in evidence and explanation.

Participants will leave with practical, three-dimensional strategies that can be implemented immediately.

    Included:

    • -Collaborating using AI tools to design units and lessons aligned to NYSSLS performance expectations
    • -Reviewing core principles behind the instructional shifts required by NYSSLS
    • -Exploring how NYSED assessment clusters are built around novel phenomena
    • -Analyzing an LS: Biology Regents Exam cluster
    • -Applying strategies that support learners across a wide range of abilities

B.Y.O.D. - Bring a fully charged laptop, iPad, or tablet.

In this newly updated and expanded version of the popular Making Groupwork the Norm workshop, we'll dive deeper into the classroom structures, routines, and mindsets that help collaborative learning thrive in middle and high school classrooms.

Whether you're new to collaborative learning or building on what you learned in the original workshop, this session offers fresh insights grounded in real classroom practice.

    You'll leave with:

    • A refined set of groupwork norms that boost student independence and peer-to-peer accountability

    • New strategies for designing tasks that foster true collaboration - not just cooperation

    • Tools for formative assessment that track individual understanding within group contexts

    • Clear guidance on managing equity, voice, and shared responsibility

    • Ways to use groupwork as a lever for differentiation and deeper learning

We'll also address persistent myths about groupwork, explore common implementation challenges, and share field-tested solutions that work across content areas.
Join us to transform groupwork from an occasional structure into a powerful, everyday practice - and reimagine what students can do when they learn together.
