    Dates: 10/28/2025

    Location: CR 1, 2, 3

Learn from Dr. Hasbrouck in person! K-12 educators everywhere are being asked to administer increasing numbers of reading assessments. All this testing is time-consuming, requires substantial paperwork, and impacts the time teachers have for planning and instruction. Educators and parents are growing frustrated and wonder if all this testing is really helping our students.

This workshop looks closely at WHY these assessments are used, HOW to select and administer the most time-efficient and valuable assessments, and most importantly to USE the data to make key instructional decisions that can help us provide the best reading instruction to all students. In the same way we expect our physicians to make decisions about our health and wellness by using the best information available, educators must use assessment tools to inform and guide professional decisions regarding students' academic "health and wellness”. But because it's instruction-not testing-that is the most important task of schools, we must select and use reading assessments as efficiently and effectively as possible.

    Learning Targets:

Understand the purpose for collecting data effectively and efficiently within an RTI/MTSS framework and system.

Understand the purpose and basic strategies involved in benchmark/screening, diagnostic, and progress monitoring reading assessments.

Know how to accurately collect, interpret, and use data using oral reading fluency assessments and informal reading inventories.

Interpret data and use it to make decisions about students' instructional needs and to evaluate students' progress.

    Minimum to run: 48

Gone are the days of providing diverse readers with a one-size-fits-all approach to small group reading. If we look at Scarborough's Rope, the Simple View of Reading, and Active View of Reading, we recognize the complexity of reading acquisition. The range of skills, knowledge, and factors required for proficient reading vary, as does the ease with which readers develop in each of these areas. This reveals a diversity of needs requiring teachers to pull from a variety of content, methods, and lesson structures.

Participants will learn to identify possible "pathways” for diverse small groups, recognizing that there are students with discrete needs in word recognition, language comprehension, active self-regulation, and bridging processes, rather than relying on leveled groupings. Utilizing the reader profiles in the Simple View of Reading, strands of Scarborough's Rope, and categories of the Active View of Reading, we will discuss strategies for addressing the range of skills, knowledge, and factors for reading proficiency.

Please note: Cancellation policy: If a participant has registered for, but is unable to attend, a Nassau BOCES workshop, they are required to drop their workshop registration on Frontline/MLP at least 7 days prior to the start date of the workshop. In the event the participant does not cancel within this timeframe, the participant/district will be billed.

Fluency is more than speed-it's accuracy, expression, pacing, and comprehension in motion. In this workshop, participants will learn how to assess and build reading fluency in developmentally appropriate ways across grades K-5. We'll explore how fluency supports comprehension, how to balance decoding with automaticity, and how to design meaningful fluency practice using texts that build vocabulary and background knowledge. Participants will also explore how to harness AI tools to support fluency instruction-including how to generate practice passages, provide targeted feedback, and scaffold for diverse learners without over-relying on tech. The session includes ready-to-use strategies for modeling fluency, tracking progress, and integrating fluency into whole-group, small-group, and independent reading time.

Location: Nassau BOCES, Robert E. Lupinskie Center - One Merrick Avenue,Westbury, NY (Westbury, NY) - Off-Site

In this study group, we'll explore how the principles of the Science of Reading extend into writing instruction. Participants will unpack the intersections between transcription (handwriting, spelling, sentence construction) and composition, and study methods for building fluency, syntax, and coherence in student writing. We'll examine practical ways to weave knowledge of language structures, genre, and vocabulary into the writing workshop model-all while honoring student choice and voice. Through live classroom labsites and study sessions, teachers will see how applying research-backed practices can make writing instruction even more powerful.

This study group will span 3 days, with the first session hosted at BOCES and the following two days unfolding right inside classrooms in Nassau County. This blend of study and live practice ensures that participants move fluidly between theory and action, learning that is both intellectually rich and immediately useful.
