Workshop Description:
This interactive workshop provides information on the Individual with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and the New York State Education Department (NYSED) regarding Special Education Mediation to encourage the use of this voluntary process statewide. This training will include the following topics: Individual with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA): The Basics, Resolving Disputes Under IDEA and IDEA Special Education Basic Mediation Procedures.

Mediation is a highly effective process to resolve issues relating to special education. In 2014- 2015, of those cases that proceeded to a mediation session in New York State, 88% resulted in agreement between parents and school districts. In mediation, the focus is on establishing collaboration and communication between the parties. In addition, mediation is provided at no cost to the parents and school district and is a less adversarial and time consuming way of resolving disputes.
