Using Play to Support Children's Expression and Social-Emotional Learning Description In this workshop, participants will explore how play serves as a powerful tool for supporting young children's social-emotional development. Participants will learn how children use play to communicate, express emotions, develop a sense of control, strengthen emotional regulation, and build the skills needed to recognize and cope with strong feelings. The workshop will also examine practical, relationship-based strategies for preventing and managing challenging behavior by setting developmentally appropriate limits during play in ways that are both supportive and empowering. Participants will learn how to use these strategies during play and generalize them throughout the daily routine to promote self-regulation across settings. Powerful photographs, video examples, and real-world case anecdotes will be shared to illustrate key concepts and enhance learning. Training Objectives 1. Participants will recognize the importance of early adversity on children's social-emotional development. 2. Participants will understand the importance of play in children's expression and its role in social-emotional learning. 3. Participants will understand why child-initiated play is empowering, particularly for children who have experienced early adversity. 4. Participants will learn how to engage children in unscripted play during indoor play times using a set of interaction skills that will support their social-emotional learning, including physical behavior and body position, describing the child's play, and naming their feelings. 5. Participants will learn how to set limits while engaging children in play and how to generalize the skill throughout the day. 6. Participants will learn how to utilize a set of responses while engaging children in play that support the development of self-regulation and how to generalize the skills throughout the day Registration will start at 8:30am Lunch will be provided.

This one-day re-certification training is intended to refresh previously learned skills and maintain trainee compliance with Safety Care standards. Session description

AI is already part of students' lives, but appropriate use can look very different in elementary, middle, and high school. In this interactive session, school librarians will get a quick grounding in how generative AI works, explore age-appropriate approaches to AI literacy, and consider when AI may support learning, when it may interfere with it, and when students may be better off without it.

We'll try a conversational "20 Questions” approach to reader's advisory and look at practical concerns including accuracy, privacy, critical thinking, and AI-generated content. Participants will leave with concrete ideas for helping students understand AI, question what it gives them, and make thoughtful choices about whether and how to use it.

Presenter Bio

Crystal Trice is a librarian, consultant, and trainer who helps libraries and educators navigate artificial intelligence with curiosity, confidence, and good judgment. With more than 25 years of experience in libraries and education, including work as a school librarian, she brings a practical understanding of teaching, technology, and the realities of day-to-day library work. In the morning session, we will identify best practices to support classroom teachers of Multilingual Learners. We will also discuss procedures for making content accessible for MLs.

Challenges with executive functioning impact individuals in many ways. By looking at skill deficits through the lens of executive functioning, we may be able to clarify our supports and roles with our students. The development of certain skills can clearly benefit from the expertise of an SLP; however, some issues require accommodations and are better addressed by other professionals. This workshop will provide an overview of different types of executive functioning skills, review general profiles of students with executive functioning difficulties, and review SLP-based strategies to support the development of these skills or to accommodate deficits.

Objectives:

-Identify and understand skills classified as executive functions

-Discuss how teams can review student challenges to make informed decisions regarding the need for formal evaluation by the SLP

-Review skills that can be addressed via speech/language therapy interventions

-Review accommodations that support students with executive functioning challenges

DITEP is derived from the International Association of Chiefs of Police Drug Evaluation and Classification Program. This two-day training will better equip school nurses and all other educators with the tools necessary to assist them in identifying whether a student is impaired on drugs in the academic setting.

DITEP can assist schools in employing an evidence-based evaluation and early detection program to identify students who may be suffering academically, socially, and emotionally from drug abuse. DITEP is designed to be inserted into already established protocols or procedures. Identifying drug-dependent students will assist schools in getting these students the help they need, as well as limiting the disruption caused by them in the academic environment.

This series of half-day workshops is designed to orient new speech language pathologists (SLPs) to school-based services. While our professional education programs provide clinical expertise, they don't adequately address the challenges of functioning within a school setting. Paperwork requirements, scheduling students within limited hours, and making therapy activities relevant yet efficient are all sources of difficulty for new SLPs.

Objectives

Session one: Starting the School Year Successfully - Scheduling sessions, getting into a routine for paperwork, and communicating with colleagues and administrators.

Session two: Navigating Formal Paperwork - Evaluation Reports, Reevaluation Reports, and IEPs. Writing goals that are relevant, data collection systems to document progress and strategies for the IEP meeting.

Session three: Making the Most of Therapy Sessions - Exploring therapy materials beyond the cards and the word lists. Review therapy activities that use curriculum materials and discuss strategies for encouraging practice and carryover of new skills outside of the therapy room.

Any questions, please contact Beth Kistler at sanweb@berksiu.org or 610-987-8532.

The Virginia Student Threat Assessment Guidelines (V-STAG) is an evidence-based model for schools to use in conducting threat assessments in K-12 schools. The model provides a step-by-step process in the manual, Comprehensive School Threat Assessment Guidelines, for conducting a threat assessment when a student has made a threat or engaged in threatening behavior. The goal of this model is to prevent violence and return a student to school by understanding why a threat was made and resolving the conflict or problem that stimulated the threat. This model was developed by Dr. Dewey Cornell and colleagues at the University of Virginia and has been widely adopted by schools in Virginia and nationwide.

Workshop Learning Objectives:

• Learn the rationale for using a threat assessment model.

• Learn and apply Threat Assessment Guidelines in schools.

• Become familiar with legal and mental health issues in threat assessment.

• Practice using the model to address cases of threats made by students.
