Organ & Tissue Donation Awareness: Bringing Life-Saving Education into Your Classroom

This four-hour virtual Act 48 professional learning opportunity is designed for educators working with students in grades 7-12 who want to explore a meaningful, real-world topic that can inspire conversation, build awareness, and potentially save lives.

Through an engaging, interactive, asynchronous learning experience, participants will discover the science and human impact behind organ and tissue donation and transplantation. Educators will learn about the critical need for organ donors in the United States, explore common myths and misconceptions, and examine scientific and medical advances that have transformed the field of transplantation.

Participants will leave with accurate, student-friendly information and resources they can use to facilitate thoughtful classroom discussions and help students better understand the importance of organ and tissue donation. The course also provides educators with practical ideas for incorporating donation education into their existing curriculum.

As an added benefit, participants will be introduced to an IU13 grant opportunity that can provide funding and support for bringing organ and tissue donation education directly into their classrooms.

22. Teaching with Muddy Boots: A Blue Green Connector Learning Experience

Step into Lancaster's premier outdoor classroom! During this two-day workshop, middle and high school educators will immerse themselves in the innovative stream restoration and scientific research taking place on the Blue Green Connector-a transformational project along the Little Conestoga Creek in the heart of Lancaster. This site is the first of many that will serve as an outdoor classroom and field location with close proximity to many schools.

Explore these current issues in our community:
*Why more than half of Lancaster County's waterways are impaired - and how our community is working to restore them.
*The fascinating history of land and water use over the past 300 years.
*What a restored floodplain looks like and how it functions.
*How scientists are monitoring the health of the Little Conestoga
*The value of wetland ecosystems and their many benefits to clean water, biodiversity, and flood control.
*The role of "Rewilding,” or restoring healthy ecosystems with native species.

Educators will:
*Engage in a hands-on "muddy boots” field experience, exploring the restoration project and the unique opportunities it offers for student learning.
*Collaboratively design instructional materials aligned with the new PA STEELS standards, tailored to the learning opportunities found throughout the site.
*Develop content that will not only be ready-to-use with their own students, but also featured on the Blue Green Connector website, expanding access for teachers across the region.

28. Elementary Life Skills Collaboration Meeting

29. Ensuring Digital Accessibility

This workshop will equip district classroom teachers, administrators, and district staff with the knowledge and tools necessary to comply with the new Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) regulations regarding digital accessibility. With the adoption of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 AA as the standard for state and local government websites, including school districts, this training will ensure that all digital resources - such as school publications, learning management systems, and online instructional materials - are accessible to all individuals. Participants will explore the core principles of WCAG 2.1 and learn practical strategies for creating and maintaining accessible digital content throughout their school district. It is recommended that district teams of (2 - 4 people) attend together to examine aspects of sample district compliance roadmaps and to develop individual district action plans.

Workshop cost is $149 per person for IU13 districts and $500 for groups of 4 or more from the same IU13 district. $199 for non-IU13 districts and $750 for groups of 4 or more from the same non-IU13 district.

34. Lancaster and Lebanon Transition Network Meetings - Transition Planning Checklist

Transition Council is a network of parents, consumers, educators and community service providers helping students with special needs in their transition from school to adult life. Meetings will: inform parents of available transition support from the school and the community; establish a communication link from school to family to community services; identify community issues and suggest possible resolutions while working toward achieving successful student transitions from school to adult life. Meetings include guest speakers and open conversations between parents, educators and agency representatives to exchange ideas.

Topic: Transition Planning Checklist - Where Do We Start Thinking about After Graduation? What happens after graduation should never be a surprise. This session will guide participants through the essential pieces of transition planning for students with disabilities from preparing for life after high school to connecting students with the support, services, and community partners they may need after graduation. A before-and-after graduation transition checklist that addresses postsecondary education and training, employment, independent living, self-advocacy, agency connections, benefits, transportation, and continued supports will be discussed.

o Harness Rube Goldberg's witty engineering designs to teach essential interactive 3D skills in Unreal Engine. Educators will explore hands-on physics and environment mechanics while connecting classroom activities directly to student opportunities in the official Rube Goldberg Competition.

• USE GAME DESIGN TO DEVELOP INTERACTIVE 3D CAREER SKILLS
o Guide students through the process of creating fully functional, publishable video games using the Unreal Learning Kit. Learn how to deliver bite-sized activities that build the creativity, critical thinking, and technical skills needed to master industry-standard software.

Attendees must participate in the ENTIRE training in order to receive the nationally recognized Crisis Prevention Institute content and certification and credit for attending.

101. Suicide Risk Assessment - Refresher (IU13 Staff Only)

Act 71 of 2014, Section 1526 of the School Code, 24 P.S. §15-1526, mandates school entities to adopt a suicide prevention and awareness policy which includes methods of intervention, including procedures that address a safety plan for students identified as being at increased risk of suicide, methods of responding to a suicide attempt, and reporting procedures.

All IU13 school social workers, school psychologists, and school counselors are required to complete an initial training, within the first year of employment, that reviews the IU13 Board Policy 819: Suicide Prevention and Awareness, suicide risk screening and assessment tools adopted by the organization, and protocols for intervention and reporting.

Each year thereafter, all IU13 school social workers, school psychologists, and school counselors are required to complete a refresher training to review adopted protocols, screening and assessment tools, and a case study review.
