In a world where adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) cast long shadows over futures, our course stands as a beacon of hope for educators committed to making a difference. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention highlights the stark reality that witnessing violence or enduring abuse can severely limit life opportunities in adulthood, increasing the risk of well-being, psychological, emotional, and mental health issues, and physical such as chronic conditions like diabetes and cancer. This course offers a powerful antidote through the practice of active mindfulness aimed at reversing these daunting trends. Experiences related to a reader's cultural background or native language builds their cultural and linguistic knowledge that helps them comprehend text. For multilingual learners, when we prepare structured oral language opportunities with talk-equity considerations, we help them bring their natural strengths to a science of reading classroom. In this workshop, we will: -Leverage speech as the dominant mode of communication -Use questions that help students wonder, affirm, extend and remind them of how to transfer their learning in oral language contexts -Supplement beginning reading texts with oral language experiences that set students up for later success with comprehension in complex texts -Identify the three processing systems involved in listening comprehension -Respond to multilingual learners authentically about their speaking and listening skills Intended Audience: K-12 Teachers; K-12 Building Principals; K-12 District Leaders; Speech & Language Therapists; ENL Teachers Eligible for 6 hours CTLE credit. Research has shown that curricular and instructional adjustments are important components of positive behavior supports that lead to the reduction of problem behavior and promotion of student success. When thinking about changing student behavior, focus should be placed on how adults are teaching and supporting the student both as part of a group and as an individual. Multiple opportunities to access, engage and respond to academic tasks help to decrease feelings of frustration, increase access to content and prompt academic engagement while creating a positive learning environment. Strategies presented will highlight curricular adaptations as to WHAT is taught, instructional adaptations as to HOW content is taught and how learning is demonstrated and ecological adaptions which relate to where, when and with whom instruction and learning takes place. Strategies presented will also form the basis for academic and behavioral accommodations and modifications as well as specially designed instruction as part of a well developed IEP. These meetings, facilitated by Chris Loiodice, Model Schools Coordinator, are designed for district technology coordinators, building and central office administrators. Participants discuss technology integration, best practices in professional development and district concerns. An agenda is set for each meeting and will include topics of interest submitted by component districts.
This working session is designed to provide support and allow time for districts to work collaboratively on the Instructional Technology Plan (ITP) Survey.
Promoting healthy and safe learning environments where students can receive the instruction and other supports they need to learn and achieve at high levels is one of the primary responsibilities of each school. Research has suggested that teachers and other school personnel often have received inadequate training in the understanding and management of problematic student behavior. This circumstance has often made both teachers and clinicians alike feel helpless in the development of successful responses to these behaviors. It is therefore important for educators to take advantage of the use of researched based behavioral science approaches. Figuring out the reasons behind a behavior is critical for the development of an appropriate response or intervention. By understanding that behavior is a form of student communication that is purposeful, interactive, predictable, and learned through the visual representation of a behavior chain or pathway, teachers and clinicians can become better equipped with the skills necessary to manage behavior effectively and efficiently. In this session, participants will learn how to independently develop behavior interventions through a process that determines why a student engages in behaviors that impede learning and that are related to the classroom environment. Thinking about the circumstances and factors surrounding a behavior in a systematic manner will help teachers set up and manage their classrooms in a proactive and positive way. Eligible for 6 hours CTLE credit. Can use 1 Consortium seat. If district pays, district approval must be confirmed prior to start of session.

Whether we're interacting with colleagues, supervisors, students, caregivers, or our own family members, school administrators and staff often find themselves in a challenging conversation. When people feel judged, we may lose the opportunity to resolve the issue at the lowest level and worse, damage our relationship with them. While you are in charge of the words you choose and how they are delivered, it is always the receiver who gives the meaning to your message. In this workshop, we will explore ways to listen to others without judgment or blame and then express our own feelings and needs. The skill involves linking our feelings to our needs, instead of blaming someone else for causing them, and helping others to do the same. Based on the work of Marshall Rosenberg (Nonviolent Communication) and Oren Sofer (Mindful Communication), this simple process provides a consistent way for all staff to develop respectful and trusting relationships. Developing safe and healthy schools begins with how we message each other. Strategies for using this approach will be practiced and discussed. Suggestions for encouraging buy-in from all staff will be included. Eligible for 3 hours CTLE credit. Can use 1/2 Consortium seat. If district pays, district approval must be confirmed prior to start of session.

89. The Science of Reading and Writing in Secondary ELA and Content Area Classrooms Gr 5-12 *IN PERSON* presented by Victor Jaccarino - 8:30-2:30pm

Program: Professional Development

Audience: Grades 5-12, ELA and all content areas

Dates: 1/27/2026

Audience: Grades 5-12, ELA and all content areas The research is in, improving reading improves writing, and improving writing improves reading. Based on the work of Dr. Nonie K. Lesaux's Literacy Briefs on The Science of Reading, Tim Shanahan's research, and Steve Graham's and Michael Hebert's Report from the Carnegie Foundation, this workshop will emphasize the connections between reading and writing in both English and content area classrooms. As we have been working diligently to improve both abilities in our classrooms, research connects the two consistently and in a variety of ways to improve both. In this interactive workshop, teachers will explore some of the research and practical and efficient ways of applying what they learn to their classrooms. Even though we understand better that reading and writing are reciprocal processes that help students learn, teachers find it challenging to help students use the skills in one to improve skills in the other. By exploring research related to The Science of Reading as well as the thoughts of experts in literacy, we can develop lessons and units that combine reading and writing to improve both skills across the disciplines. In this interactive workshop, participants will review research regarding The Science of Reading and Reading/Writing Connections, discuss these connections, and walk away with skills and ideas that will help their students improve both reading and writing skills in all content areas. Eligible for 6 hours CTLE credit. Can use 1 Consortium seat. If district pays, district approval must be confirmed prior to start of session.
