Participants will dive into the PA ELS for Kindergarten, mapping standards-aligned objectives to various play types (solitary, parallel, and collaborative). We will then tackle the logistical challenge of the "Full-Day Clock," providing a model for a balanced daily schedule that weaves together whole-group instruction, small-group interventions, and sustained blocks of child-initiated developmental play. Attendees will leave with a concrete "Standards-to-Play" crosswalk and a revamped daily schedule template that meets both district mandates and developmental needs. Learning Objectives: Define Purposeful Play: Watch the kindergarten video. Differentiate between "free play" and "scaffolded developmental play" as defined by the PA Early Learning Standards. Map Standards to Centers: Align at least three Kindergarten standards (e.g., Standard 1.1: Foundational Skills or Standard 2.1: Numbers and Operations) to specific classroom play centers (Blocks, Dramatic Play, Sensory). Identify Teacher Roles: Describe the teacher's role during play-moving from "supervisor" to "facilitator" through intentional questioning and observation techniques. Analyze Daily Time Blocks: Evaluate a standard 6.5-hour full-day schedule to identify "time-wasters" and reclaim at least 45-60 minutes for uninterrupted developmental play. Communicate Value: Draft a "Value of Play" statement to share with parents and stakeholders that explains how play-based learning meets state academic requirements.

Dates: 9/23/2026

Weed Before You Seed: De-implementation as the First Step to Structured Literacy Implementation

In a time of reduced funding and significant shifts in education policy, school and district leaders are being asked to do more with less - and Pennsylvania's new Structured Literacy legislation adds both urgency and direction to that work. This session explores how leaders can leverage implementation science to strategically de-implement practices that are misaligned with the science of reading, while creating the enabling conditions needed to successfully transition to structured literacy approaches. As Pennsylvania moves to meet the mandates of the new legislation, systems and instructional practices must evolve together. Participants will examine how intentionally stopping or scaling back what isn't working creates space for evidence-based structured literacy practices to take hold, and will leave with practical tools and actions their teams can apply to support sustainable, equitable implementation within their local context.

Session Objectives:

* Define de-implementation and identify low-value practices within current literacy instruction

* Communicate the rationale for de-implementation to staff, families, and stakeholders

* Identify and plan strategies for stopping low-value practices and making room for structured literacy approaches

* Explain the enabling conditions necessary for successful implementation

* Identify and plan four key actions the leadership team can take to build a climate that supports effective, sustainable, and equitable structured literacy implementation across local contexts

82. De-implementation for Structured Literacy (In-Person PM Session)

Program: Educational Services - Professional Development

Location: CAIU Susquehanna Room (Enola, PA) [map]

Audience: District Administrators, Curriculum Directors, Building Principals, Teacher Leaders, Coaches, Reading Specialists
