In addition, this course will provide strategies and supports for Athletic Directors who also oversee Physical Education & Health in their Districts.

6. Therapeutic Crisis Intervention 2 edition

Therapeutic Crisis Intervention for Schools (TCIS) is a trauma-informed crisis prevention and management system. The TCIS system helps staff create a learning environment that decreases risk factors while increasing protective factors so both students and staff can feel safe. TCIS provides staff an understanding of trauma sensitive practices and skills (co-regulation) to help students learn how to regulate and manage their own emotions. These newly learned skills encourage a greater willingness and capacity for our students to learn.

TCIS helps participants and schools to:

◉ Create a trauma-sensitive environment where students and adults are safe and feel safe within their roles as a staff member
◉ Pro-actively prevent and/or deescalate potential crisis situations with the students they work with
◉ Manage a crisis situation in a therapeutic manner, and, if necessary, intervene physically in a manner that reduces the risk of harm to students and staff
◉ Process the crisis event with students and each other to help improve their coping strategies to reduce future risk

9. Sight word recognition and Orthographic Mapping

In this session participants will learn about the research around orthographic mapping and how to promote sight word learning with students. Specific strategies will be taught to use multi-sensory learning techniques to increase instant word recognition, including how to link spelling to facilitate automatic word retrieval. Participants will have opportunities to apply strategies and create activities to use with their students. Assessment practices in this area will also be examined. We encourage school teams and/or individuals from multiple disciplines to attend including: administrators, school psychologists, reading teachers, classroom teachers, speech and language pathologists, special education teachers, and other school professionals.

Join staff development trainers Hilary Chaya and Betsy Serapilio for an experiential and engaging workshop to increase your repertoire of Tier 1 instructional practices. We will review the mindsets needed to shift instruction toward a more equitable and student-centered approach. Other points of entry for this work will be the NYS Culturally Response-Sustaining Education (CR-SE) framework, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), the NYS Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Benchmarks, and brain-based student management strategies - all under the umbrella of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support(MTSS).

While restorative practices are utilized to proactively build relationships and foster a safe school climate, conflict may still occur. Repairing harm through inclusive processes help strengthen connections within a community. Through restorative practices, individuals gain greater understanding of how the actions impact others and are supported in taking accountability.

In this workshop, participants will learn how to respond to conflict and harm that has occurred using more targeted, restorative approaches. Participants will practice using affective language, facilitating a restorative chat, as well as planning for a responsive circle process.

Teaching is a complex and challenging task. Having a mentor provides support with the content while helping the new practitioner acclimate to the school climate and culture. Mentoring relationships are central to the success of developing and retaining effective practitioners in our schools. Successful mentoring creates a collaborative instructional partnership by establishing the norm that learning is a lifelong process. This two-week asynchronous course will provide strategies for mentor teachers to create a collaborative and trusting partnership with their mentees. Mentors will also be introduced to the NYS Mentoring Standards.

25. NYSED's P-3 Literacy Instructional Best Practices Event

This event, which will be a hybrid webinar with in-person discussion and presentations, will provide New York State administrators and literacy leaders with an opportunity to learn about the P-3 Instructional Best Practices Tool to be utilized when reviewing instruction and making the required attestation per Education Law §818.

As per Education Law §818, districts must reflect on the instructional best practices and literacy curriculum for students in prekindergarten through third grade, ensuring literacy instruction and interventions align with the Commissioner's requirement of literacy instruction to be based on the body of research known as the Science of Reading.

At this event, New York State Education Department (NYSED) staff, along with partners from BOCES and the Big 5, will present an overview of the P-3 Literacy Instructional Best Practices. Participants will have time to walk through the resource, reflect on the implementation of the best practices, and consider the steps to complete the attestation process. Please note that to attend this event, you must attend in person at a BOCES or Big 5 designated site.

Lunch will be provided and teams are able to stay past 1:00 to meet and plan if desired.

After this two-hour course, all participants will be current in this updated mandatory training.

Let's face it - it's easier to text or email but to build sustainable relationships, we need to make the call! Here's a breakdown for each virtual, 45 minute session

"Call Me, Maybe” with Erica - In this session participants will learn self-management strategies to regulate the nervous system and prepare to make the call as well as what to do when emotions (yours or theirs) get heightened. We'll also dive into the science behind the nervousness and have some fun while developing these necessary skills.

"Say This” with Kristin - In this session participants will be introduced to a few different possible scripts to use when calling guardians. We will review this proactive step to solidifying relationships with guardians, and will talk through various scenarios to prepare for. Participants will conclude with the opportunity to practice, and ask questions.

"SOS” with Melissa - In this session, participants will learn strategies that can be used when a conversation doesn't go the way you hoped. Join Melissa to explore restorative language that can be used when repairing harm is your next step.

49. Adult Mental Health First Aid

Mental Health First Aid is an internationally recognized mental health awareness program that has been in use since 2001. Mental Health First Aid is listed in the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's National Registry of Evidenced-based programs and practices. The training is eight hours in length and includes a three year national certification. Training is designed to:

• Increase participants awareness of the signs and symptoms of mental illness.

• Decrease the negative stigma's associated with mental illness.

• Empower participants to assist youth who may be struggling with mental illness or challenges.

• Allow participants to better understand the warning signs and risk factors of depression, anxiety, psychotic disorders, trauma, eating disorders, substance use disorders and suicide.

• Teach participants a five-step action plan to help an individual in or out of crisis connect to professional care.

All humans are hardwired to connect. Just as we need food, shelter and clothing, human beings also need strong and meaningful relationships to thrive. Restorative practices is a field within the social sciences that studies how to strengthen relationships between individuals as well as social connections within communities. Though newer to the social sciences, restorative practices have deep roots within indigenous communities throughout the world.

In this workshop, participants will learn how to set high expectations of their students while being supportive. They will practice how to provide direct feedback and how to ask questions that foster accountability while remaining supportive to young people. Participants will also learn the most effective methods to resolve common conflicts that we see daily in our schools. In addition, they will gain a deeper understanding of community building through the power of the circle.

Therapeutic Crisis Intervention for Schools (TCIS) is a trauma-informed crisis prevention and management system. Mental Health First Aid is an internationally recognized mental health awareness program that has been in use since 2001. Mental Health First Aid is listed in the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's National Registry of Evidenced-based programs and practices. The training is eight hours in length and includes a three year national certification. Training is designed to:

• Increase participants' awareness of the signs and symptoms of mental illness.

• Decrease the negative stigma associated with mental illness.

• Empower participants to assist youth who may be struggling with mental illness or challenges.

• Allow participants to better understand the warning signs and risk factors of depression, anxiety, psychotic disorders, trauma, eating disorders, substance use disorders and suicide.

• Teach participants a five-step action plan to help an individual in or out of crisis connect to professional care.
