Stolen Focus by Johann Hari
Join school librarian colleagues in a discussion of Johann Hari's thought-provoking book. This book explores human attention, and the crisis of diminishing attention spans in today's society.
From the book's cover: "We think our inability to focus is a personal failure to summon enough willpower to ignore our devices. The truth is even more disturbing: Our focus has been stolen by powerful external foces that have left us uniquely vulnerable to corporations determined to raid our attention for profit." Our book study will focus on how that affects student learning in our schools.

This book study will be virtual, with a blend of both synchronous & asynchronous discussion and activities. More details will follow.
Each participant will receive a copy of the book. Please register by September 25 so you can receive your book by the start date.

Program: School Improvement

Audience: All individuals interested in the topic are invited to join.

Public speaking is famously cited as the top fear in America, often ranking higher than death, yet it remains an unavoidable requirement for professional and personal success. In the second edition of Speak with No Fear, communications coach Mike Acker offers a transformative guide to moving past the sweaty palms and racing heart of performance anxiety. This book isn't about complex theory; it is a practical manual designed to get you "in the game" through seven actionable strategies. By shifting your perspective and focusing on preparation rather than perfection, Acker helps you dismantle the costly comparison trap that occurs when we measure ourselves against TED Talk stars. Written with relatable anecdotes and a dose of humor, the book encourages readers to trade skepticism for self-belief. Whether you are prepping for a boardroom presentation or a wedding toast, these strategies provide the tools to calm your nerves and speak with genuine confidence.

Program: School Improvement

Audience: All individuals interested in the topic are invited to join.

Dates: 2/4/2026 to 3/18/2026

Our ability to focus is collapsing, with teenagers now averaging only sixty-five seconds on a single task. In the New York Times bestseller Stolen Focus, Johann Hari investigates why our attention spans are disappearing and reveals a disturbing truth: this isn't a personal failure of willpower. Instead, our focus has been systematically stolen by powerful external forces and corporations designed to raid our minds for profit. Through a global journey, Hari identifies twelve deep-seated causes behind this crisis, ranging from the predatory nature of social media to environmental factors like rising pollution and the decline of mind-wandering. He interviews Silicon Valley dissidents and world-leading experts to uncover how we have been hacked and, more importantly, how we can fight back. This groundbreaking book moves beyond simple self-help to offer a collective roadmap for reclaiming our minds, transforming the way we understand attention in a world addicted to distraction.

Communication is more than just the words we choose; it is filtered through the unique internal "wiring" that colors every interaction we have. In the second edition of I Said This, You Heard That, Kathleen Edelman provides a transformative framework for understanding why certain conversations inspire us while others leave us feeling overwhelmed or misunderstood. This book explores the fundamental temperaments that dictate how we process information and respond to those around us, offering a roadmap to more harmonious relationships with spouses, colleagues, and even strangers. To ensure the insights are personally applicable, each copy includes a unique scratch-off code for a forty-question digital assessment to help you identify your specific communication profile. Complemented by quick-reference guides and practical conversation starters, Edelman's approach moves beyond theory into daily practice. By learning to recognize both your wiring and that of others, you can bridge the gap between what is said and what is actually heard.

48. BOOK STUDY - The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt, Facilitated by Helena Maguffin

Program: School Improvement

Audience: All individuals interested in the topic are invited to join.

Dates: 2/11/2026 to 3/18/2026

Closed
In The Anxious Generation, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt explores the "Great Rewiring of Childhood," tracing the historic surge in adolescent anxiety, depression, and self-harm to the early 2010s. He argues that society has fundamentally traded a play-based childhood for a phone-based childhood, creating a digital environment that captures young attention while starving them of essential real-world experiences. By examining the collapse of unsupervised play and the rise of addictive social media, Haidt identifies a profound irony: we have overprotected children in the physical world while leaving them dangerously underprotected online. This book study will examine Haidt's urgent call to action, focusing on his core pillars for reform. We will discuss the benefits of delaying smartphone and social media use, the necessity of phone-free schools, and the vital importance of restoring independence and free play. Together, we will explore how to reclaim a healthy developmental path and foster a sense of genuine agency and mental well-being for the next generation.

The AI revolution is no longer a distant prospect-it is reshaping the classroom in real time. In Brave New Words, Khan Academy founder Salman Khan delivers a definitive roadmap for navigating the intersection of artificial intelligence and education. Endorsed by Bill Gates and Walter Isaacson, this masterclass explores how GPT technology can move beyond a mere tool to become a personalized tutor for every student. Khan dismantles the fear that AI will replace human connection, arguing instead that it will enhance it. By adapting to individual learning paces and styles, AI empowers parents and teachers to bridge educational gaps and foster creative problem-solving. Beyond the classroom, Khan examines the ethical implications and societal shifts this technology demands from administrators and hiring managers. This is an essential guide for anyone looking to harness the power of the AI revolution to build a more accessible, equitable, and effective future for learners everywhere.
