4. Non-Violent Crisis Intervention: Refresher Training

Program: Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NCI)

This standard refresher training is for individuals who are currently certified in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI) and are required to receive this annual 3-hour refresher training to maintain certification. *Act 48 hours are provided only for NCI trainings that are held at IU8 Offices.
Due to guidelines established by the Crisis Prevention institute, Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8 is only able to train employees of school districts within the IU8 counties of Blair, Bedford, Cambria, and Somerset. - Participants must arrive on time, actively participate, stay for the entire session (no exceptions) & pass the written test. - Successfully demonstrate intervention skills - Certification may be withheld if the participant misses more than 10 minutes of instruction. (late, phone call, non-participation, etc... - Dress casually / comfortably - Bring a pencil/pen - Wear comfortable, non-slip shoes (no sandals or open-toed shoes) - Trainings may be canceled due to low enrollment - Electronic devices / Computers are not needed for this training NOTE: In the event of inclement weather, registrants will be notified by email of any schedule changes.

7. Gifted Boot Camp

Are you new to Chapter 16 and Gifted Education in Pennsylvania or would you like a "refresher"? Please join this growing community from IU8 for discussions, information sharing, and resources that build key knowledge and confidence in the area of gifted education. Through these sessions, we will review Chapter 16 and spend time writing GIEP's including present levels, goals, short-term learning objectives, and SDI's. You must attend both day of this training. Cost is $50.00 for both days. PAYMENT OPTIONS Payment options include self-pay through PayPal or "Bill My District.” All self-payments must be made before the event. If self-payment is not received before the event, registrants must pay via PayPal upon arrival. If payment cannot be established before or upon arrival, you will not be permitted to attend the event. CANCELLATION TERMS We understand that plans change. New teachers will be introduced to their colleagues across the region and learn about the requirements of the IU8 District Induction Consortium. Description: UDL is a framework for inclusive education that aims to reduce barriers to learning and optimize each individual's opportunity to learn. It is based on brain research that examines pathways of engagement, recognition, and strategic planning. Understanding the three principles and core beliefs of UDL is necessary to reflect on the materials, strategies, and methods implemented within your classroom, allowing you to plan lessons more purposefully and flexibly, and make them accessible, resulting in optimal outcomes for all students. 12. ES Intensive Skills Training for Students with Emotional Behavior Disorders

This three-day series is designed to assist multi-disciplinary teams meet the needs of students with emotional behavior disorders in various settings. Teachers and administrators often struggle with offering a balance of high-quality and effective instructional practices while establishing behavior management systems that result in every student experiencing success. In this training, noting applicability to students of all instructional levels, a review of effective instructional strategies and procedures for delivering high-quality instruction will be covered. This will not only include direct instruction techniques but also establishing a cooperative learning environment, identifying different types of assessment, and data recording to inform instruction and intervention matching. This series includes addressing both academic and behavioral skills through implementation of evidence-based practices. A short preview of some behavior skills that will be reviewed include establishing instructional control and teaching self-advocacy skills. Additionally, Trauma informed practices along with tips to increasing family engagement will be included. An emphasis will be placed on effective instruction methodologies, standards aligned instruction, school-wide positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS), advanced tier interventions such individual token economies, behavior contracts, self-monitoring checklists, and implementation of positive behavior support plans. Tips for training classroom team members to implement interventions with fidelity leading to increased positive outcomes for students will be covered.

28. Unpacking the Science of Reading: Explicit, Systematic Phonics Instruction

This two-day professional learning session will take a deep dive into the practices of explicit, systematic phonics instruction. This initial training is for individuals who have never been certified in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI) or have allowed their certification to lapse beyond the expiration date shown on their most currently issued Blue Card(tm) (the card would have been provided at their last NCI Training). The training emphasizes early (verbal) intervention strategies for preventing and/or managing disruptive behavior. Disengagement and holding skills are also taught as a means to help manage safety. Transport techniques are included as well. After receiving this certification, the annual 3-hour Foundations of NCI Refresher Training is required to maintain certification. *Act 48 hours are provided only for NCI trainings that are held at IU8 Offices. (late, phone call, non-participation, etc...) - Dress casually / comfortably - Bring a pencil/pen - Wear comfortable, non-slip shoes (no sandals or open-toed shoes) - For full-day trainings, lunch is on your own - Trainings may be canceled due to low enrollment - Electronic devices / Computers are not needed for in-person trainings NOTE: In the event of inclement weather, registrants will be notified by email of any schedule changes.
