2. Math Inquiry Into Real World Problems Grades 7-11

This PLO addresses the universal student question in math class: "What does this have to do with the real world?" In this course participants work through a series of math inquiries and problems related to non renewable energy use, sustainability (footprints), global population, engineering and music. In the process the math analysis serves to lend insights into broad world issues and students discover new ways that math serves to reveal understanding of a wide range of real world phenomena. Participants will have a large menu of possibilities to choose from for application in their classrooms. The work is content rich in algebra, functions, modeling, equation solving, computation and more. The highly differentiated, open ended and tiered structure allows engagement by learners of diverse abilities.

Synchronous Online Participants connect for video conference sessions using a computer with microphone & webcam. Phones are not adequate. Full attendance is earned by participation in discussions, interactions using digital tools, & creation of materials/ resources. It is verified by time on Zoom.

3. Empowering Education: Navigating the World of Generative AI in Teaching

Program: Teacher Center

Audience: All Educators

Generative AI has taken the world by storm and education can benefit from new powerful tools! This workshop will focus on teacher use of generative AI with a sub-focus on student use. Participants will learn how to use generative AI for increased work productivity and efficiency. You will learn and practice using generative AI tools for lesson planning, content development, creation of presentations and quizzes, and differentiating lessons and materials. You will also practice using generative AI to write letters and emails or curriculum. Multiple free resources will be shared and used during this workshop. Effective use of prompts is a big part of learning to use generative AI and we will spend time learning how to better engineer prompts to get more out of your chat. Participants will also gain ideas on how to teach students to use generative AI effectively, responsibly, and with academic integrity. We will include a discussion on the concerns of AI use in education. This F2F session at SUNY New Paltz will include a presentation, small group discussions, and sharing from all participants. There will be hands-on learning using technology. Please bring a laptop-type device to use during this workshop. Be aware of the parking requirements and fees at SUNY New Paltz.

Conference

The May 4th Annual Spring Sustainability Conference at SUNY New Paltz is a celebration of the ongoing collaboration between the Mid-Hudson Teacher Center and NY Master Teacher Program. It will provide an opportunity to learn and deepen our understanding of how best we can bring issues regarding environmental sustainability into our classrooms irrespective of the age of our students or our content areas. It is part of the Mid-Hudson Sustainability In Education Series which aims to bring together a community of K-12 teachers who are committed to exploring climate solutions together and creating/assimilating curricular resources for themselves and other teachers. You may attend any or all sessions.

5. Integrating AI for Planning, Teaching and Learning in Humanities

6. PROGRESS MONITORING SERIES: Advanced Progress Monitoring for Educators

Audience: All School Staff: Administrators, Teachers, ENL, Special Educators, Related Service Staff, Preservice Teachers, Teacher Assistants

This professional learning opportunity was designed for the educator who is already actively using progress monitoring within their setting for academics and/or behaviors. Participants should have familiarity with basic methods of progress monitoring. This PLO will expand upon the previous courses (Data Collection & Academic and Behavioral Progress Monitoring 101) and allow participants to increase their knowledge in this area through asynchronous and synchronous sessions and assignments.

7. Podcasting in Education: Hands-On Workshop for Classroom Integration

Audience: Teachers, librarians, club advisors

Podcasting offers a myriad of benefits for students including increased engagement, digital literacy skills that prepare them for a digital world, enhanced communication skills, collaborative learning, promotion of creativity, and so much more. But the process can seem daunting if you don't know where to start. In this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to work with top-tier podcasting equipment typically used by professionals in the field. From microphones and mixers to recording software and editing tools, you'll get to explore the capabilities of these devices under guidance and create a sample podcast with other participants.
The best part is, this equipment is available for loan from the MHTC for teachers to use with students in their classrooms. Join us on a spring morning at the beautiful SUNY New Paltz campus to see what podcasting is all about.

8. Farm to Fork at Chester Agricultural Center

Program: Teacher Center

Audience: K-12 educators

Engage in a day of interactive learning focused on teaching core standard concepts through the lens of agriculture. This professional learning opportunity will take place at Chester Agricultural Center. Educators will participate with lessons focused on food, fiber, and fuel systems, art and agriculture, and share in a round table discussion with community-based professionals about the availability of resources for students, educators, families, and communities. Chester Agriculture Center executive director Sara Katz and community relations and farm store manager Maria Caicedo will provide a tour and discuss the resources available at Chester Agriculture Center and Ag in the Classroom and share how they work to promote and support new farm startups. Lunch is included in the training and participating PreK-12 educators will receive over $100 of books, kits, and resources.

9. Building Soil & Community

Program: Teacher Center

Audience: All Teachers

Location: Seed Song Farm 60 Esopus Avenue, Kingston NY 12401

The Hudson Valley has long been home to a vibrant and diverse farming community. Students in many school districts come from farming families. Our local farms provide rich, culturally relevant learning opportunities. It is imperative that educators are knowledgeable about both the scientific and communal aspects of growing food locally. During this workshop we will tour Seed Song Farm in Kingston which provides educational and cultural experiences of sustainable agriculture and agroecology. As part of the workshop, we will explore the connection between soils and carbon sequestration. We will learn how farmers, gardeners, families, and communities can effectively build more arable soils through composting, cover cropping, and preserving native habitats. We will discuss small scale composting and soil diversity as well. There will be a discussion about how to integrate this information into the content areas.

10. Sounds In Motion

Program: Teacher Center

Audience: speech therapists, AIS Reading specialists, teachers, special educator teachers, ENL educators, paraprofessional

SOUNDS IN MOTION is an interventional program designed to develop listening skills in children, which in turn helps to improve articulation, and vocabulary skills, auditory memory, phonemic awareness and early literacy. Sounds In Motion pairs body movements with phonemes to engage children in discriminating speech sounds while helping set their bodies up for correct production of each sound all while having fun! SIM is used primarily with pre-kindergarten through first grade students, and may also be applicable to older students who are having difficulty learning to read. It enables speech-language pathologists to work collaboratively with teachers in regular education and special education classrooms, in developing oral language and early reading and writing skills. It also acts as an early diagnostic tool, identifying children who may need further evaluation. This session will be in person. Materials for the program will be provided.
