5. TCIS: Therapeutic Crisis Intervention for Schools (Levels I & II)

The Therapeutic Crisis Intervention for Schools (TCIS) training program for child and youth care staff presents a framework for implementing a crisis and management system that reduces the need to rely on high-risk interventions. The TCIS framework complements the Response to Intervention (RTI) approach and also includes aspects of trauma-informed care. Staff who are trained in the TCIS program are provided a crisis prevention and intervention model designed to teach staff how to help children learn constructive ways to proactively diminish crisis and also support students and staff to react to a crisis. The skills, knowledge, and professional judgment of staff in responding to crises are critical factors in helping young people learn constructive and adaptive ways to deal with frustration, failure, anger, rejection, hurt, and depression. Program objectives include learning to proactively prevent and/or de-escalate a potential crisis situation with a child or young person, manage a crisis situation in a therapeutic manner, and if necessary, intervene physically in a manner that reduces the risk of harm to children and staff and process the crisis event with children and young people to help improve their coping strategies. Upon completion, this training will certify the attendee in Levels I & II certification.

Attendance is required for all four days to receive certification.
Lunch will be on your own on 12/1, 12/2, and 12/9.

"Help - My students can't write!” This familiar challenge continues to surface across grade levels and content areas. While writing performance has long been a concern, many educators have not had access to a clear, structured approach for addressing it in daily instruction. This session builds on the foundation of The Writing Revolution (TWR), also known as the Hochman Method, and reflects updated thinking aligned to current expectations for writing across disciplines. Participants will explore a cohesive set of explicit writing strategies designed to improve student outcomes. These include sentence-level strategies, single and multi-paragraph outlines (SPO & MPO), and approaches to summarization, note-taking, and annotation. While TWR is not a program or curriculum, it provides a practical framework of instructional methods that support clear, structured writing aligned to content learning and current NYSED priorities. In Part 1, participants will examine core principles of explicit writing instruction and engage with a selection of high-impact sentence-level strategies grounded in writing research. In Part 2, participants will extend this work into paragraph and multi-paragraph structures, with a focus on organizing ideas, supporting analysis, and planning extended written responses across content areas.

Registered participants will receive a copy of The Writing Revolution 2.0 for extended use.

It is recommended to register with a colleague who is horizontally or vertically aligned, as structured discussion time is embedded throughout the session to support application to curriculum and instruction.
