These students will sit at the Board of Education table during public meetings, offering valuable input and representing the voices of their peers. To help students prepare, Genesee Valley BOCES has created a 1-hour virtual training course designed specifically for student board members across the region/state.

CTLE credit is not awarded to students. However, a district leader must register on Frontline in order to access the course materials and support students locally. Once the materials have been received, there is no need for district staff to register again for future use.

Biographical Sketch:

Mike Wiernicki is an experienced mathematics educator with over 30 years of teaching and coaching expertise. He has taught mathematics across elementary, middle, and high school levels, as well as at the collegiate level as an adjunct professor for pre-service teachers at Mercer University. Mike earned a Master's Degree from West Georgia College in 2002 and a Specialist Degree from the University of Georgia in 2019. Currently, he serves as a consultant, collaborating with schools and districts to enhance mathematics instruction. Mike is a seasoned presenter who has shared his expertise at local, state, regional, and national conventions.

Session Description:

This professional learning session offers participants an opportunity to deepen their understanding of numeracy and fluency through a research-based lens. Participants will engage in meaningful discussions to define fluency, explore instructional strategies, and pedagogical approaches that support numeracy development. The session will provide an in-depth examination of the strategy stages and their progression within the structure of the Georgia Numeracy Project. Attendees will also learn how to assess numeracy and fluency with fidelity using the Georgia Numeracy Project Assessments, including the GloSS and IKAN screeners, to evaluate student strategy stages and number knowledge. To enhance implementation, participants will receive access to a dedicated web page containing resources and handouts tailored to the professional learning content.

15. APPR Re-Certification for Lead Evaluators of Teachers (November 2025 Cohort)

The State Education Department requires all evaluators of teachers and principals to be certified through an appropriate training process. Lead evaluators are those who conduct summative annual professional performance reviews (APPR) of teachers. Each district must certify that these lead evaluators have been trained in the minimum requirements as outlined in the APPR regulations. The components of this APPR re-certification training are based on the four-day Lead Evaluator Certificate Training. This asynchronous session is meant to serve as an opportunity for lead evaluators to annually revisit the major components of that training and renew certification, which will allow continued evaluation of teachers. This session is meant to be viewed in collaboration with an administrative team within your building or district, but it may be viewed by independent administrators as well.

25. TCIS: Therapeutic Crisis Intervention for Schools (Levels I & II)

The Therapeutic Crisis Intervention for Schools (TCIS) training program for child and youth care staff presents a framework for implementing a crisis and management system that reduces the need to rely on high-risk interventions. The TCIS framework complements the Response to Intervention (RTI) approach and also includes aspects of trauma-informed care. Staff who are trained in the TCIS program are provided a crisis prevention and intervention model designed to teach staff how to help children learn constructive ways to proactively diminish crisis and also support students and staff to react to a crisis. The skills, knowledge, and professional judgment of staff in responding to crises are critical factors in helping young people learn constructive and adaptive ways to deal with frustration, failure, anger, rejection, hurt, and depression. Program objectives include learning to proactively prevent and/or de-escalate a potential crisis situation with a child or young person, manage a crisis situation in a therapeutic manner, and if necessary, intervene physically in a manner that reduces the risk of harm to children and staff and process the crisis event with children and young people to help improve their coping strategies. Upon completion, this training will certify the attendee in Levels I & II certification.

Attendance is required for all four days to receive certification.

Why do some students struggle to connect mathematical concepts across different contexts, even after repeated practice? Research shows that hands-on learning with manipulatives deepens understanding and strengthens problem-solving skills by making abstract concepts tangible. However, manipulatives are often underused or treated as surface-level tools, rather than drivers of deep mathematical thinking. This interactive session will explore how to effectively integrate manipulatives into math instruction to enhance conceptual learning across grade levels. Through hands-on activities and research-based strategies, participants will discover how to move beyond rote procedures to meaningful, inquiry-driven learning. The Holocaust Educator Network is a free professional learning opportunity made possible through a generous donation from Temple Emanu-El of Batavia, NY. The network is committed to building a collaborative community of educators in the Genesee region, dedicated to promoting accurate and impactful Holocaust scholarship in schools. Our mission is to honor the memory of the Holocaust, empower students with historical understanding, and inspire them to become engaged citizens who stand against hate and work toward a more just and compassionate world. To support this mission, the Holocaust Educator Network offers annual professional development opportunities for educators and administrators, focusing on the effective integration of Holocaust education into the classroom. In line with the 2022 New York State mandate, school districts are required to ensure Holocaust education is accurately represented in curricula. This initiative helps educators meet this requirement while also aligning with Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) principles, emphasizing the human and ethical dimensions of Holocaust education. To facilitate this work, the School Improvement Team, in partnership with various organizations, will organize three full-day sessions each year, each centered on a specific Holocaust-related theme. These sessions are designed to equip educators with the knowledge, resources, and instructional strategies necessary to bring these critical lessons back to their schools and classrooms.

Arlène Elizabeth Casimir, in her book Trauma-Responsive Pedagogy, says that "teaching is evolving into a practice with therapeutic accents.” And if you've spent time in a classroom these days, it couldn't feel more true. However, have you also found yourself saying, "I don't know what to do here. I'm not a therapist. I'm not trained for this.” You're right. And there is a difference between providing a trauma-responsive, nurturing, and healing environment and providing therapeutic interventions for students. This training will help participants determine the difference between an environment they, as teachers and staff, can reasonably expect to maintain, and how to know when to set a healthy boundary and leverage the support of others in different roles to meet student needs appropriately.

The Anxious Generation delves into a generation-defining investigation into the collapse of youth mental health in the era of smartphones, social media, and big tech- and outlines a plan for a healthier, freer childhood. After more than a decade of stability or improvement, the mental health of adolescents plunged in the early 2010s. Rates of depression, anxiety, self-harm, and suicide rose sharply, more than doubling on many measures. In The Anxious Generation, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt lays out the facts about the epidemic of teen mental illness and investigates the nature of childhood, including why children need play and independent exploration to mature into competent, thriving adults. Haidt shows how the "play-based childhood” was wiped out by the arrival of the "phone-based childhood” in the early 2010s. He presents more than a dozen mechanisms by which this "great rewiring of childhood” has interfered with children's social and neurological development, covering everything from sleep deprivation to attention fragmentation, addiction, loneliness, social contagion, social comparison, and perfectionism. Most importantly, Haidt issues a clear call to action. He proposes four simple rules that might set us free. He describes steps that parents, teachers, schools, tech companies, and governments can take to end the epidemic of mental illness and restore a more humane childhood.

New York State is piloting performance-based learning and assessment as part of the shift to the NY Inspires Plan. With the NY Inspires Plan, the Portrait of a Graduate, and the NYS Performance-Based Learning and Assessment guidance shaping expectations, educators are being called to rethink how student learning is measured.

This full-day professional learning will clarify the differences between projects, performance tasks, and authentic assessments using the latest state guidance. Participants will examine examples of performance-based learning that connect directly to NYSED guidance and explore frameworks that anchor instruction in transferable skills, equity, and meaningful assessment. They will also discuss rubrics and evidence of learning as tools for gauging student progress in ways that align with statewide shifts, while identifying practical next steps for districts navigating the transition away from traditional "bubble sheet” assessments.

By the end of the day, participants will leave with a clearer understanding of how these proposed statewide shifts affect local practice, along with resources and language to guide conversations back in their districts. Culture, Community, and the Classroom brings together educators and local traditional artists to discover how traditional arts can be assets in your classroom. In this 2-day workshop, participants will delve into the impact of cultural identity on teaching and learning, build inclusive learning plans with proven tools for student engagement, and develop ideas for lessons that foster inquiry and belonging. This is an active, fun, hands-on experience: one teacher from 2024 says, "I thought this would be an interesting workshop to help me connect some ideas in class. But now I know this is one of the best PDs I've been to and I cannot wait to use the materials in my classes.” Educators will earn 12 CTLE hours, and 8 teachers will be paired with a local teaching artist in a fully-funded classroom residency in Spring 2026. 77. TCIS: Therapeutic Crisis Intervention for Schools (Levels I & II)

The Therapeutic Crisis Intervention for Schools (TCIS) training program for child and youth care staff presents a framework for implementing a crisis and management system that reduces the need to rely on high-risk interventions. The TCIS framework complements the Response to Intervention (RTI) approach and also includes aspects of trauma-informed care. Staff who are trained in the TCIS program are provided a crisis prevention and intervention model designed to teach staff how to help children learn constructive ways to proactively diminish crisis and also support students and staff to react to a crisis. The skills, knowledge, and professional judgment of staff in responding to crises are critical factors in helping young people learn constructive and adaptive ways to deal with frustration, failure, anger, rejection, hurt, and depression. Program objectives include learning to proactively prevent and/or de-escalate a potential crisis situation with a child or young person, manage a crisis situation in a therapeutic manner, and if necessary, intervene physically in a manner that reduces the risk of harm to children and staff and process the crisis event with children and young people to help improve their coping strategies. Upon completion, this training will certify the attendee in Levels I & II certification.

Attendance is required for all four days to receive certification.
