3. Child Abuse Identification & Reporting (Certification Only)

Child Abuse Identification & Reporting

Mandated reporters can participate in this web-based online training course at any time, 24/7. Users must complete the course within the course duration which is the current school calendar year (2025-2026). Users learn definitions, indicators, and how to make a report to the New York Statewide Central Register. This course meets the New York State Education Department mandatory requirements for Training in Child Abuse Identification and Reporting. In accordance with Chapter 363 of the Laws of 2018, the Board of Regents adopted amendments to certain sections of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education related to Reports of Child Abuse in an Educational Setting.

Included Updates:
Chapter 56 of the Laws of 2021 amended Social Services Law § 413 to require additional training to include protocols to reduce implicit bias in decision-making processes, strategies for identifying adverse childhood experiences, and guidelines to assist in recognizing signs of abuse or maltreatment while interacting virtually.
Chapter 25 of the Laws of 2024 amended Social Services Law § 413 to require additional training to include protocols and guidance on identifying abused or maltreated children with intellectual or developmental disabilities.

The required training consists of a 3-hour asynchronous online training with accompanying assignments.

4. DASA: Harassment, Bullying, Cyberbullying, and Discrimination in Schools: Prevention and Intervention Certification Training

DASA: New York State's Dignity for All Student's Act (Dignity Act) seeks to provide NYS public elementary and secondary school students with a safe, supportive environment free from discrimination, intimidation, taunting, harassment, and bullying on school property, a school bus and/or at a school function. The Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES is a NYSED approved provider of the Dignity Act certification training.



The required training consists of a 6-hour asynchronous online training with accompanying assignments.

5. SAVE: School Violence Prevention & Intervention Certification Course

Anyone applying for school certification after February 2, 2001 must complete 2 hours of training on school violence prevention and intervention. This workshop includes training in effective classroom management techniques, identifying the warning signs of violent and other troubling behavior, and intervention techniques for resolving violent incidents in the school. This training is intended for anyone working with children and in a school setting.

Topics Covered:

  1. The warning signs within a developmental and social context that relate to violence and other troubling behaviors in children;
  2. The statutes, regulations and policies relating to a safe nonviolent school climate.
  3. Effective classroom management techniques and other academic supports that promote a nonviolent school climate and enhance learning; character education, citizenship and civility.
  4. The integration of social and problem-solving skill development for students within the regular curriculum
  5. Intervention techniques designed to address a school violence situation;
  6. How to participate in an effective school/community referral process for students exhibiting violent behavior.
  7. Defining, identifying, intervening and ending bullying in all its forms, including cyberbullying.

The required training consists of a 2-hour asynchronous online training with accompanying assignments.

6. The Needs of Students with Autism Training

The Needs of Students with Autism

In response to the growing number of children being diagnosed with autism, the Legislature amended Sections 3004(4) and (5) of the Education Law to require all persons applying for a teaching certificate or license on or after September 2, 2009, as a special education teacher or as a school administrator who works in special education, to complete coursework or training in the needs of children with autism. This workshop will fulfill the NYSED requirement for Classroom Teaching Certification in all areas of Education. Participants of this course will learn about the characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) as well as behavior supports and best instructional practices for supporting individuals with ASD. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will complete a certification of completion application that they can submit to the NYS Education Department along with other relevant forms when they apply for certification.

7. SLS Council Meeting

Program: School Library System

Dates: 10/14/2025 to 5/19/2026

The SLS Council meetings are designed to be a bridge between the School Library System team and the school librarians in each of the districts and non-public schools that are members of the system. Each district has a designated Council member who is required to attend the meetings but all members are welcome to attend. The morning will be the meeting and the afternoon will be a professional learning opportunity.

8. Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES Curriculum and Staff Development Council

CSDC is a working group dedicated to developing the capacity of teachers and leaders in the CO BOCES region. Meetings include NYSED updates, collegial sharing, and collaborative discussions about curriculum, instruction and assessment topics. Members of the group are tasked with:

Asynchronous BUZZ course for TAs and Aides who have taken the level 1 TCIS certification Therapeutic Crisis Intervention for Schools (TCIS) is a trauma-informed crisis prevention and management system. The TCIS system helps staff create a learning environment that decreases risk factors while increasing protective factors so both students and staff can feel safe. TCIS provides staff an understanding of trauma sensitive practices and skills (co-regulation) to help students learn how to regulate and manage their own emotions. These newly learned skills encourage a greater willingness and capacity for our students to learn.TCIS helps participants and schools to:
◉ Create a trauma-sensitive environment where students and adults are safe and feel safe within their roles as a staff member
◉ Pro-actively prevent and/or deescalate potential crisis situations with the students they work with
◉ Manage a crisis situation in a therapeutic manner, and, if necessary, intervene physically in a manner that reduces the risk of harm to students and staff
◉ Process the crisis event with students and each other to help improve their coping strategies to reduce future risk

11. Personal Finance Education Planning for Embedded Implementation

This collaborative workshop is designed for secondary district teams implementing the embedded model of the New York State Personal Finance Education Objectives for grades 5-8 and 9-12. Participants will engage in a structured process to unpack the objectives, examine connections to existing courses, and develop a draft implementation plan aligned to NYSED expectations for required state reporting, along with clear next steps for successful implementation.

Using a provided standards alignment crosswalk, teams will identify where personal finance concepts are already embedded within courses and where gaps exist that require intentional integration. The session will guide participants through a clear, step-by-step planning process to ensure coherence across grade levels and content areas.

13. CARE Network- Elementary and Middle School Session 4

The Regional CARE (Collaborative Action for Resilient Education) Network is a new collaborative opportunity designed specifically for student service providers (counselors, social workers, psychologists, mental health providers) to come together to discuss their roles, study best practices, and share and borrow ideas. Participants will network with regional colleagues, obtain updates from NYSED, and dive deeper into Tier 2 and 3 supports and resources. This session will be facilitated by the Behavior Excellence Coaches from the Instructional Support Services Department. There will be 4 meetings across the school year with extended learning opportunities. There will be professional presentations provided in the areas of Trauma, SEL, Restorative Practices, and Mental Health.

16. The Power of the Read Aloud (PK-2)

This full-day (9:00-2:00) professional learning session invites teachers to explore the NYS PK-3 Literacy Best Practices Guide as a resource for strengthening instruction. Grounded in Science of Reading research on how students learn to read, the session highlights key practices that support foundational skills, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Participants will engage in digging into the practices and examining how they support student learning. Teachers will also look at selected units from their own curriculum to make connections and consider ways to strengthen instruction. Participants will leave with practical ideas to support reading development in their classrooms.

18. Day 1 - NY Inspires Summer Institute: From Standards to Clarity: Prioritizing Learning for Impact

Develop a deep understanding of priority standards and the skills embedded within them to drive instructional clarity and coherence. Educators will unpack standards to identify the key skills and concepts and use that understanding to establish a skills continuum, develop clear learning targets, make informed instructional decisions, design aligned formative and summative assessments, and identify authentic demonstrations of learning. Participants will work with their own grade level or content-area standards and a unit from their current curriculum to apply this process in a meaningful and relevant way. Student voice doesn't happen by accident-it's built through intentional instructional design. This workshop explores how cooperative structures can amplify student voice, agency, and engagement across grade levels and content areas. Participants will experience a variety of cooperative learning structures and learn how to support students in communicating effectively, thinking critically, and collaborating with peers. Educators will leave with practical instructional tools that ensure total participation and foster a student centered learning community.

23. PBL 101 Workshop through PBL Works

Audience: K-12 Grade Educators

In this workshop, participants will plan a Gold Standard project for their students and learn equity-centered teaching practices to facilitate high-quality PBL. The PBL 101 workshop models the Project Based Learning process.

Workshop Outcomes * Develop a personal vision for how Gold Standard PBL serves students and their communities. Plan Gold Standard projects that teach meaningful learning goals and are relevant to students and their communities.

* Include well-curated resources, effective learning experiences, and purposeful assessments to ensure that all students are appropriately challenged and supported as they move through the project path.

* Engage students in learner-centered practices driven by sustained inquiry throughout the project.

* Balance structure and flexibility in the project facilitation, using varied forms of evidence to ensure that all students grow in relation to learning goals.

Cost is based on 35 participants. If participation is not at max capacity, the cost per participant will be adjusted accordingly.

25. NYSED Numeracy Briefs for Elementary Teachers

Program: Professional Development Unit

Audience: PK-5th/6th Grade Educators

This full-day session (9:00-2:00) helps elementary teachers understand and apply the key ideas from the New York State Education Department Numeracy Briefs. Participants will explore high-leverage content, instructional practices, the use of mathematical representations, and assessment to support strong mathematics instruction.

Through classroom examples and discussion, teachers will examine the instructional practices and learning experiences that support strong elementary mathematics teaching, including how to elicit student thinking, facilitate meaningful discussions, use representations, and support equitable learning for all students.
