MRTC Book Study: Relevant and Meaningful Subtitle: Engaging Learners in an Era of Distraction Date: April 13 - May 22 Live Zoom Sessions: 4/29, 5/13, 5/22 Time: 4:00 - 5:00 PM Location: Google Classroom and Via Zoom Facilitator: Liza Gonzalez A 10-hour book study. A book will be provided. There is an option for $250 particpation payment. In an age of constant digital pings and dwindling attention spans, the traditional "stand and deliver" method of teaching is hitting a wall. This book study explores how to pivot from simply delivering content to creating experiences that resonate with students' lives. Why Join This Study? This isn't just another pedagogical theory session. We will dive into actionable strategies to bridge the gap between curriculum requirements and student interest. We'll examine: The Science of Attention: Understanding why the modern brain is wired for distraction and how to work with it, not against it. Authentic Design: Moving beyond "fun" activities to create lessons with real-world utility and emotional resonance. Cultivating Agency: Strategies to give students more "skin in the game" through choice and voice. Practical Frameworks: Specific tools to audit your current units for relevance and impact. Who Is This For? K-12 educators, instructional coaches, and administrators who are tired of the "engagement struggle" and seeking sustainable, research-backed ways to make learning stick. Study Logistics Format: Weekly chapter discussions with "Try-It-Tuesday" classroom applications. Outcome: Participants will leave with a redesigned "Legacy Unit" that prioritizes deep engagement over passive compliance. "Relevance isn't a hook we use to trick kids into learning; it is the very foundation upon which long-term memory and mastery are built."
