This session is to vet questions created for the Checkpoint A & B World Language Regional Assessments. Please note districts will need to send teachers to participate in the assessment process in order to be eligible to receive the checkpoint assessments in the spring.
Join us to increase your awareness about suicide prevention in schools, to feel empowered to understand your role in identification and prevention, and to develop a plan to support your school's efforts in preventing suicidal behaviors among students. Following the training, participants will be able to: 1) Identify warning signs of suicide 2) Understand the critical and limited role of faculty 3) Become familiar with school procedures for referring students 4) Be more informed about suicide 5) Reinforce protective factors 6) Understand how suicide prevention can be applied in mental health education This FREE workshop is open to Herkimer BOCES Employees and the 10 Component School Districts.

Lasting approximately two hours, the course covers essential topics such as recognizing warning signs, implementing de-escalation techniques, and understanding relevant legislation, including the Safe Schools Against Violence in Education (SAVE) Act. Just as people trained in CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and question, persuade, and refer someone to help. Thousands of Americans like you say "Yes" to saving the life of a friend, colleague, sibling, or neighbor each year. As a QPR-trained Gatekeeper, you will learn to recognize the warning signs of suicide, know how to offer hope, and know how to get help and save a life. Who should take this training? The New York State Education Department will release a new toolkit, developed in collaboration with Dr. Socorro Herrera, Dr. Kathy Escamilla, and Dr. Robin Cabral. The agenda includes an overview of the six briefs developed to help educators ensure that the teaching of reading is inclusive of ELLs and MLs. This event will be held as a hybrid webinar with in-person discussion and online presentations. New York State administrators and literacy leaders will be presented specific and useful information to understand and address the ontological differences between ELLs, MLs, and monolingual students. Please note that to participate in this event, you must attend in person at a designated BOCES, Big 5, or Small City School District site. Participants in the event will have the opportunity to learn about the briefs with Dr. Socorro Herrera, a professor at the College of Education and the director of the Center for Intercultural and Multilingual Advocacy at Kansas State University. Dr. Herrera's K-12 teaching experience includes an emphasis on literacy development, and her research focuses on literacy opportunities with culturally and linguistically diverse students, reading strategies, and teacher preparation for diversity in the classroom.

The workshop was developed by collaborating with the NYSASP, SPCNY, and Alberti Center for Bullying Abuse Prevention. HSAR is designed to improve skills, processes, and protocol for helping students at risk for suicide through: This training will: 1. Equipping educators with tools, knowledge, and skills to assist students having thoughts of suicide or engaging in suicidal behavior. 2. It is understanding the value of pre-planning and standardized procedures for intervention. 3. Identifying the value of collaboration and shared decision-making between school mental health professionals, community providers, and students and their families. 4. Reviewing documentation of suicide intervention. 5. Preparing to implement standardized procedures that reflect best-practice intervention. Registration is opened to School professionals, including psychologists, school counselors, social workers, school administrators who are involved in the helping process when a student may be at risk for suicide, and community mental health providers who work with and in schools. This workshop is for staff needing the INITIAL or REFRESHER CPI: Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training. INITIAL Training is for those directly involved in crisis situations, teaching de-escalation techniques and non-restrictive interventions. It includes an online component followed by a 3-hour in-person session on December 15, 2025, from 12 PM to 3 PM at the Gateway Center, Herkimer BOCES. The online portion is a prerequisite. Course fee: $80.00 billed directly to your district. REFRESHER Training is for staff who have completed initial training and need annual recertification training. This workshop will also occur on December 15, 2025, from 12 PM to 3 PM at the same location. Course fee: $60.00 billed directly to your district.
