This book study invites educators to examine the rising rates of youth anxiety and the cultural shifts impacting today's students, based on Jonathan Haidt's groundbreaking work The Anxious Generation. Together, we will explore the effects of screen time, social media, and the decline of play on child development, while reflecting on practical strategies to support student well-being and resilience. Through discussion, reflection, and collaborative activities, participants will connect Haidt's research to their classroom practice and develop actionable ideas for creating healthier learning environments. Starts November 17 Books will be provided. There are limited spots available for participants to be paid $25 per hour for the 15 hours upon completion.

Following the training, participants will be able to: 1) Identify warning signs of suicide 2) Understand the critical and limited role of faculty 3) Become familiar with school procedures for referring students 4) Be more informed about suicide 5) Reinforce protective factors 6) Understand how suicide prevention can be applied in mental health education This FREE workshop is open to Herkimer BOCES Employees and the 10 Component School Districts.

In New York State, training in School Violence Prevention and Intervention is mandatory, along with a six-hour DASA Certification and Mandated Reporter training for anyone pursuing a new certification, including educators apply for their professional certification. The agenda includes an overview of the six briefs developed to help educators ensure that the teaching of reading is inclusive of ELLs and MLs. This event will be held as a hybrid webinar with in-person discussion and online presentations. New York State administrators and literacy leaders will be presented specific and useful information to understand and address the ontological differences between ELLs, MLs, and monolingual students. Please note that to participate in this event, you must attend in person at a designated BOCES, Big 5, or Small City School District site. Participants in the event will have the opportunity to learn about the briefs with Dr. Socorro Herrera, a professor at the College of Education and the director of the Center for Intercultural and Multilingual Advocacy at Kansas State University. Dr. Herrera's K-12 teaching experience includes an emphasis on literacy development, and her research focuses on literacy opportunities with culturally and linguistically diverse students, reading strategies, and teacher preparation for diversity in the classroom.

Session 2: I Know I Taught It But: Checking for Understanding You may have taught it, but did the students learn it? How do you know if all the students got it? Do they know they got it? In this session, participants learn not only what it means to think like an assessor but also how to apply student-engaged assessment strategies into daily instruction to position students as leaders of their own learning. After the session is over, both participants and their students will be able to apply checking for understanding strategies throughout a lesson to gather evidence of student learning against the learning target to see if what was taught was what they learned.

HSAR is designed to improve skills, processes, and protocol for helping students at risk for suicide through: This training will: 1. Equipping educators with tools, knowledge, and skills to assist students having thoughts of suicide or engaging in suicidal behavior. 2. It is understanding the value of pre-planning and standardized procedures for intervention. 3. Identifying the value of collaboration and shared decision-making between school mental health professionals, community providers, and students and their families. 4. Reviewing documentation of suicide intervention. 5. Preparing to implement standardized procedures that reflect best-practice intervention. This workshop is for staff needing the INITIAL or REFRESHER CPI: Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training. INITIAL Training is for those directly involved in crisis situations, teaching de-escalation techniques and non-restrictive interventions. It includes an online component followed by a 3-hour in-person session on December 15, 2025, from 12 PM to 3 PM at the Gateway Center, Herkimer BOCES. The online portion is a prerequisite. Course fee: $80.00 billed directly to your district. REFRESHER Training is for staff who have completed initial training and need annual recertification training.
