6. CSE Chair Meeting (May)

These meetings are reserved for Herkimer County component school district CSE Chairs and Directors of Special Education. Attendees will have an opportunity to remain up-to-date with current topics from the New York State Education Department and local partnerships.
Youth Mental Health First Aid teaches you how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges among children and adolescents ages 12-18. The course will teach you how to apply the MHFA Action Plan (ALGEE): Assess for risk of suicide or harm, listen nonjudgmentally, give reassurance and information, encourage appropriate professional help, and encourage self-help and other support strategies. This training will be divided into two 3-hour in-person sessions. The first session will be held on May 12, 2025, from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm, and the second session will be held on May 20, 2025, from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm. A short online (approx. 1 hour or less) portion must be completed before the first in-person session. Access to the online portion will be provided to you once you enroll. Both sessions will be held at the Gateway Center, 420 E. German St, Herkimer, NY, 2nd floor, Bridge Room. This registration is for Herkimer BOCES Staff and the 10 Component School Districts. 8. Youth Mental Health First Aid for Non-Component Districts

Youth Mental Health First Aid teaches you how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges among children and adolescents ages 12-18. 10. Leadership Capacity: Essential Skills for Teacher Leaders

Outcome: Participants will gain practical tools to enhance their leadership presence and ability to inspire and support peers.
This six-hour course is required for anyone pursuing a new certification, including educators applying for their professional certification. Upon completion, Herkimer BOCES will report your completion electronically. The class has two portions. The first portion is a 3-hour online piece completed via Google Classroom. Instructions on how to access the classroom will be emailed to you. THE GOOGLE CLASSROOM PORTION OF THIS COURSE MUST BE COMPLETED BY THE DUE DATE BEFORE THE SECOND IN-PERSON SESSION!!!! If the online piece is not completed prior to the in-person session, you will not be granted credit for the course. This workshop is for staff who have completed the initial training and require a REFRESHER. To continue being CPI-qualified, you must take a yearly refresher. This workshop will review the basic concepts of responding to various crisis levels and the corresponding intervention. To receive a CPI blue card, staff must demonstrate competency in CPI concepts and interventions. You must have completed the initial CPI training to attend this refresher course. This workshop will be offered on May 16th, 2025 at the Gateway Center from from 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM. The cost is $45.00, and it will be billed directly to your department.

Join us to increase your awareness about suicide prevention in schools, to feel empowered to understand your role in identification and prevention, and to develop a plan to support your school's efforts in preventing suicidal behaviors among students. Following the training, participants will be able to: 1) Identify warning signs of suicide 2) Understand the critical and limited role of faculty 3) Become familiar with school procedures for referring students 4) Be more informed about suicide 5) Reinforce protective factors 6) Understand how suicide prevention can be applied in mental health education This FREE workshop is open to Herkimer BOCES Employees, our 10 Component School Districts as well as Non-Component Districts.

Outcome: Teacher leaders will learn how to create focused, outcome-driven groups that positively impact classroom instruction and student learning.
The workshop was developed by collaborating with the NYSASP, SPCNY, and Alberti Center for Bullying Abuse Prevention. HSAR is designed to improve skills, processes, and protocol for helping students at risk for suicide through: This training will: 1. Equipping educators with tools, knowledge, and skills to assist students having thoughts of suicide or engaging in suicidal behavior. 2. It is understanding the value of pre-planning and standardized procedures for intervention. 3. Identifying the value of collaboration and shared decision-making between school mental health professionals, community providers, and students and their families. 4. Reviewing documentation of suicide intervention. 5. Preparing to implement standardized procedures that reflect best-practice intervention. Registration is opened to School professionals, including psychologists, school counselors, social workers, school administrators who are involved in the helping process when a student may be at risk for suicide, and community mental health providers who work with and in schools.
