1. Teaching AP Calculus AB

Program: Capital District/Northern New York

The Calculus AB workshop is primarily concerned with developing students' understanding of the concepts of calculus and providing experience with its methods and applications. The workshop emphasizes a multi representational approach to calculus, with concepts, results, and problems being expressed graphically, numerically, analytically, and verbally.

The connections among these representations also are important. Many different focus lessons and activities will be utilized to increase students overall success in calculus and on the AP Exam. Participants will also review free responses from the AP Calculus Exam and practice scoring student sample papers using the scoring standard.

Institutes are only offered for 30 hours inservice credit. Tuition will be $650 for early registration (on or before May 28), $725 starting on May 29. Your tuition includes course materials, continental breakfast and lunch each day. Tuition must be paid in full by course start date. 2. Teaching AP English Literature and Composition

The AP Literature and Composition workshop will offer a variety of topics, resources and practical methodologies. Prose and poetry analysis strategies and materials will move from introductory to complex. Curriculum design and instructional units will be structured to meet the needs of both new and experienced AP teachers. An experienced exam reader, the instructor will tailor composition exercises to meet the College Board standards for success on the AP exam. Participants will deconstruct the grading of the exam and evaluate multiple choice strategies.

Complete units based on works of Shakespeare, Conrad and Joyce will be accessible online upon request.

3. Teaching AP Environmental Science

Program: Capital District/Northern New York

This will be a four-day interactive session on delivering the AP Environmental Science class for new or experienced teachers. The session will feature a little field work and modeling of activities for AP students including aquatic studies, soils, air pollution. Emphasis will center on providing students with a rigorous experience to give them the insight to approach today’s environmental problems based in core science. Many resources and course materials will be shared on a flash drive during the session.

4. Teaching AP Statistics

Program: Capital District/Northern New York

In this 4-day workshop we will cover the four interdependent major themes of AP Statistics - Exploratory Data Analysis, Data Collection, Probability and Distribution, and Statistical Inference. The schedule will consist of group work, activities, lectures, videos, discussion, plenty of examples, and questions and answers. The TI graphing calculator will be used extensively. (Please bring a TI graphing calculator with you.) Selected multiple choice questions, with solutions, will be assigned as homework. Materials will be available in electronic and/or paper form. Takeaways will include handouts, syllabi, resources and a community of colleagues. Participants will learn techniques to help students connect theory to application and develop an appreciation of the relevance of statistics while learning the necessary skills for success on the AP Statistics exam. I will share some of my experiences as a seasoned teacher of AP Statistics, a member of the initial AP Statistics Development Committee, and a table leader and question leader at the AP Statistics readings.

5. Teaching AP US History

Program: Capital District/Northern New York

This inservice course gives participants an overview of the AP program in US History (APUSH),concrete information about the curriculum and exam, and practical, classroom-ready best practices. This model allows for both large and small group sessions, including time to focus on new and experienced teacher issues, and explore different methodologies. Focus includes insight into the creation and expansion of the APUSH program, selection of text and course materials, development of syllabi, daily lessons, and assessments, and direct instruction on the scoring of the short answer, long essay question (LEQ) and document-based essay (DBQ) question.

Participants will have the opportunity to prepare and analyze data sets, write questions,deconstruct the writing process and other experiences to improve the quality of their APUSH classroom. Participants are asked to bring their current APUSH textbooks, a "Best Practice" to share, and a laptop computer.

6. Teaching AP World History

Program: Capital District/Northern New York

The APSI in World History will prepare teachers to teach the AP World History course by familiarizing them with the thematic learning objectives, key concepts, and historical thinking skills. This APSI will emphasize hands-on learning. Teachers will have the opportunity to plan unit outlines, specific learning activities, and learn to grade essays the way they are graded at the exam Reading. Those who are new to the course will have the opportunity to address concerns they have about pacing, planning, grading, or obtaining the necessary materials. More experienced teachers will be able to share and gain insights from their colleagues and discuss the implications of the 2017 exam revisions for their instruction
