This retreat is designed to strengthen our Olympia staff community through engaging team-building exercises and valuable learning opportunities. We'll foster a deeper sense of pride in working at Olympia by reflecting on our school's vision and discussing our shared values as educators regarding instruction and our beliefs about students. The retreat will feature professional learning sessions focused on- professional learning communities, instruction and behavior management/discipline. We believe this collaborative learning will promote alignment and consistency across our school. Dedicated time will also be provided for teams and departments to collaborate and plan how this learning will impact their practice. Professional Learning Hours & Compensation: GTA Members: This is a fantastic opportunity to earn hours toward your contractual 'choice professional learning' requirement. Remember, 10 mandatory hours are required, and hours 11-20 are compensated at the contractual rate by the district. Since the new professional learning year begins July 1st (hours reset to zero), this retreat is a perfect way to get a head start! If you've already completed your 20 hours of choice PL by the retreat, you can still participate and will be compensated by the building for any hours over 20. It's a win-win: either complete your mandatory hours or get paid for your participation! Traditional grading practices, often rooted in historical norms, can inadvertently perpetuate inequities and hinder student success, particularly for students from marginalized backgrounds or those facing socio-economic challenges. Common issues include: Punitive approaches: Overemphasis on penalties for late work, missing assignments, or behavioral issues, which disproportionately affect students with limited resources or support systems. Averaging grades: Calculating grades based on a simple average can penalize early struggles and obscure true mastery of learning objectives, especially when formative assessments are heavily weighted. Incorporation of non-academic factors: Grading for compliance, effort, or attendance rather than strictly on evidence of learning can disadvantage students who have external responsibilities or face barriers to consistent attendance/engagement. Lack of clarity and consistency: Inconsistent grading policies across departments or even within individual classrooms can create confusion for students and families, making it difficult to understand expectations and measure progress. Limited opportunities for re-assessment: Insufficient opportunities for students to demonstrate learning after initial attempts can lock in low grades, discouraging further effort and growth. These practices can lead to increased stress, disengagement, and a fixed mindset among students, widening achievement gaps rather than narrowing them. There is a pressing need for high school educators to re-evaluate and adapt their grading methodologies to better reflect student learning, foster intrinsic motivation, and promote equity. The Greece Central School District Enhancing Mentorship Program is a customized, two-full-day learning experience designed to empower mentors to effectively guide and support their mentees. This program will delve into the foundational principles of effective mentoring, incorporating research-based techniques and aligning with the Mentor Cycle framework. Participants will: Understand the critical role and impact of mentors within our District. Be familiar with the goals, structure, and timeline of our mentoring program. Understand and be able to apply the Mentor Cycle to guide their work with mentees. Develop skills in key areas of effective mentoring, such as communication, feedback, and coaching. Be prepared to develop partnership agreements that outline expectations for their mentoring relationships. Gain knowledge of relevant district resources and initiatives to support new teachers.
