2. Coding for Cowards: An Experience for the Interested Novice (@PNW BOCES)

Program: LHRIC - Instructional Technology (Model Schools Courses)

Dates: 3/2/2018

Most districts have taken a serious look at the role that coding exercises can play in developing computational thinking for K-12 students. Most of the highly popular coding environments (Scratch, Tynker, Code.org) are based on "building blocks" that make it easy to create interactive stories, animations, games, music and art. As students become immersed in coding work, they learn important mathematical and computational ideas, while also learning to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively.

This session is geared specifically for those who may not have a formal programming or computer science background, but are open to exploring how the thinking involved in coding can help enhance thinking across all disciplines. You will actively engage in programming scenarios where you will become familiar with the interface, commands, and basic protocols/commands of Scratch.

3. MATH SPA - Grades 4-5 Focus on Multiplication & Division Models

Program: CPDCS - 17-18 Mathematics - MATH

The NYS Next Generation Math Standards have been released. How do I effectively ensure that my students are developing an appropriate grasp of the content standards while developing the mathematical standards they will need to be successful? What do the mathematical practices look like at my grade level? At my grade level, is the focus of the standard multiplying a whole number by a fraction or multiplying a fraction by a whole number? During this session, participants will focus on the conceptual understanding of grade level content and the continuum of mathematical standards. After planning for instruction, differentiation and assessments, you will leave feeling refreshed and re-focused.

Dates: 3/8/2018

New
Please join us for our annual Explore Learning users group where you will have the opportunity to come together with other educators in the area to share best practices, discuss implementation strategies and find out how other districts are using Gizmos and Reflex.

This session will be lead by Explore Learning and LHRIC staff and will allow users to learn how online simulations help teachers take advantage of research-proven instructional strategies and help students of all ability levels develop conceptual understanding in math and science.

Teachers will see how to supplement and enhance instruction with powerful interactive visualizations of concepts.

Learn how students can manipulate key variables, generate and test hypotheses, and engage in extensive “what-if” experimentation.

A light breakfast will be provided Explore Learning.

Program: CPDCS - 17-18 HV-RBE-RN

Audience: Administrators, ENL Coordinators, Teachers, Counselors and Support Staff

Dates: 3/21/2018

Supporting Students with Interrupted/Inconsistent Formal Education (SIFE): Strategies for Fostering Engagement and Achievement in Math. This session will focus on strategies for supporting the math skills of SIFE. Participants will explore strategies that can be used with students with a range of abilities in math. Such strategies will include the explicit teaching of math vocabulary, the use of real-life contexts for applying mathematical principles, and math activities that support both content learning and language development. Participants will apply the concepts they have learned in developing lessons to be used in their context.

Participants will:

*Explore & apply relevant aspects of second language acquisition and culturally relevant instruction in support of developing engagement of SIFE in mathematics.
*Apply strategies to develop academic language and vocabulary for SIFE in mathematics.
*Scaffold lesson plans for both mathematics and language learning for SIFE.
*Explore how to support talk-to-learn strategies for SIFE during mathematics lessons.
*Adapt mathematics content to provide greater access to SIFE in mathematics.
