Join us for an engaging and hands-on workshop designed for math teachers looking to deepen their understanding of how to teach fractions from concrete to symbolic representation. In this full-day session, we'll begin with Cuisenaire rods to help students grasp the foundational concept of fractions as parts of wholes. Through a progression from visual models to abstract symbols, you'll learn how to transition students' thinking from physical representations to fraction notation. We will cover unit fractions, equivalent fractions, operations with fractions, mixed numbers, and improper fractions. By the end of the workshop, you will have practical strategies for using concrete tools to support the progression to abstract understanding, helping your students confidently navigate and apply fractions in various mathematical contexts. In the morning we will dive deep to internalize the mathematics and the different representations. In the afternoon, participants will focus on applying the learning to their own classrooms with time to develop lessons and practice implementing them.
