We will work to model the practices we want to see in our classes by creating a community where we can all gain the knowledge and skills we need to thrive, provide each other with feedback, and support each other throughout the process.

3. Elementary School and Middle School Building Leaders Network

Program: Educational Resources

Audience: Administrators - Middle School Building Leaders

Dates: 3/13/2024


Five facilitated meetings provide a forum for building leaders to share challenges, successes, ideas, and best practices. These virtual meetings provide participants opportunities to collaborate with colleagues around timely topics offering opportunity for professional growth and the development of a network of peers.



All principals and assistant principals are invited to join our county-wide School Building Leader Network. The purpose of this network is to strengthen communication and collaboration and can be a valuable avenue for providing direction and support. The Dutchess BOCES county-wide School Building Leader meetings are structured to provide a forum to discuss, share, learn, and support the important work of building leaders.

5. Data Team Training - Pawling Central School ONLY

Program: Educational Resources

Audience: Pawling Teachers

Dates: 4/2/2024 to 5/23/2024

This full team training will include opportunities for participants to learn what a Data Team does, how to review/analyze data using protocols, plan and implement interventions, and interpret the results. Dutchess BOCES will provide instruction and guided facilitation during the sessions, while gradually releasing control of the process to the Data Team. The Data Team will then implement a course of action based on the data, review/analyze the data, and then discuss and implement a new course of action. The process is intended to build an understanding of the cyclical nature of Data Teams and support the foundational expectations necessary to build a culture for data-driven decision-making.


Participants will be able to:


• Identify the parts and expectations of each component of the data cycle.


• Organize, facilitate, and participate in meetings using an agenda and protocols.


• Use data protocols to review and analyze data.


• Develop a theory of student learning needs based on the data.


• Design and implement a researched-based instructional strategy in all classrooms.


• Support and facilitate the rollout of the action plan to the rest of the faculty/staff.


• Assess the action plan after its implementation using the data from its assessment.


• Determine next steps.


These are the first two sessions of the 6 part series. The additional sessions will take place during the 2024-25 school and will have a separate registration entry.

The Curriculum Assessment and Instructional Technology (C.A.I.T.) Council meets monthly to discuss district technology planning and implementation in order to support curriculum and instructional practices to improve student learning. C.A.I.T members, including Directors of Technology, Technology Integration Specialists, and/or participants designated to attend by district leadership, discuss staff development initiatives including best practices and uses of instructional technology. The council will explore successful initiatives from a variety of sources in order to work together to best assess the effectiveness of technology on teaching and learning within our county, districts and schools.

9. Virtual Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE)/Committee on Special Education (CSE) Chairperson Training - Spring 2024

This virtual training series of workshops will consist of six (6) live Zoom sessions. Each module will include pre-work activities.

Materials will be accessible via Google folder. Upon registration and prior to the start date, participants will be provided with the Zoom link and information on how to access materials.

Virtual live session dates: 5/8, 5/14, 5/23, 5/29, 6/5, and 6/6. Training sessions will be 9:00-12:00 pm, one-hour lunch break, and then resume 12:45-2:30.

16. Identifying and Intensifying Intervention: What to Do and How to Do It

18. The Book Doctor Is In

Program: School Library System

Audience: K-12 School Librarians and Public Librarians

We are partnering with Demco to offer a free book care workshop with Kimberly Young, the Book Doctor. Book Doctor Workshops provide book care training with the aim of helping you keep your collection in circulation longer. Training includes protection and repair techniques and offers:


• A hands-on experience

• Ideas for protecting books ahead of circulation

• Tried-and-true methods for a variety of repairs

Kimberly will tailor the 3-hour training to your specific needs but workshops typically cover basic page repairs, tip-ins, hinge and spine repairs, book jacket and laminate applications, and how to reinforce spines.

Course Materials:

Hardcover and softcover books, as well as small tools, will be supplied for participants.

Course Instructor:

Your Book Doctor is Kimberly Young. She has worked in a wide variety of library settings across regionally, socially, and culturally diverse areas of the U.S. Her work focuses on collection development, material processing, and book care. As the Book Doctor, she has traveled the country helping hundreds of attendees build a range of new skills, a better understanding of processing books, and confidence. Kimberly loves meeting all the new people who are as passionate about book care as she is.

19. Culturally Responsive Teaching Workshop- "Family Engagement: Communication & Culture"

20. How to Foster and Support Self-Determination in All Students

According to research, self-determined students have better outcomes for employment, education/training, and independent living. This training is designed to provide participants with tools and resources to promote self-determination in the classroom by integrating skills into instruction and activities.

22. Specially Designed Instruction (SDI) for Administrators (Synchronous)

Program: Regional Partnership Center

Audience: Building administrators and new special education administrators; other administrators welcome

Dates: 6/4/2024

Meeting Times: 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

The Specially Designed Instruction for Administrators professional development training package is the fifth in a suite of trainings on the development and use of specially designed instruction (SDI) for students with disabilities. This training is intended to further develop an administrator's knowledge of SDI and how SDI should be designed and developed based on individual student need to address their learning obstacles. The content is most beneficial for building administrators and new special education administrators; however, all administrators are welcome.
This is a one session online course offered synchronously. The session will be 3 hours from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. The date is: June 4, 2024.
A Zoom Meeting link will be emailed to registrants prior to the session.
Participants will:















• Define and describe specially designed instruction.















• Recognize how to differentiate SDI from general education.

24. NYS Literacy Initiative: An Overview of the NYSED Literacy Briefs

On January 10th, the State Education Department, in partnership with BOCES across the state, held a hybrid webinar in which a new series of literacy briefs focused on the science of reading were released. The keynote for the presentation was provided by Dr. Nonie K Lesaux, Roy Edward Larsen Professor of Education and Human Development at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Dutchess BOCES is pleased to offer another facilitated session, which will be identical to the initial hybrid webinar, for all administrators and literacy leaders who were unable to attend the initial event. The agenda will include an overview of the science of reaching and each of the seven literacy briefs, with time to reflect and discuss with colleagues. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the briefs with Dr. Lesaux and the SED team.

26. Phonological Awareness: Establishing Foundations for Reading Success

The purpose of this training is to help participants gain a greater understanding of the Science of Reading; specifically, what phonological awareness is and how crucial this skillset is to the foundation of reading success. Participants will explore what skills to teach when, and how to teach these skills for students to master phonological awareness. The training will also provide context for the importance of using assessments to improve the effectiveness of phonological instruction for students. To overcome equity barriers, educators need to focus on systemic, explicit instruction to teach the skills supported by the science of reading.

In some non-selective, otherwise ordinary NYS public schools, students in poverty perform well, disrupting the overall trend for these students nationwide. In two 3-year studies, leaders of 164 successful schools with 40% or more students in poverty were interviewed and overwhelmingly identified the same practice as vital to their students' success: all improvement efforts were approached through the strategic use of data, the building relationships and culture, or both, requiring no additional funding. Participants will hear the research story and individual vignettes, and will have the opportunity to collaboratively or individually create a "start on Monday morning” plan of action. One of the really exciting things about the three dimensions of the NYSSLS and NGSS science standards is the vertical alignment within the Science and Engineering Practices, Disciplinary Core Ideas, and Cross Cutting Concepts. In this half day workshop we will look at the NGSS vertical alignment matrices for the SEPs, DCIs, and CCCs and think about how the science we teach students builds on previous grades and/or towards future grades. We will use these tools to better understand the importance of our instruction, consider connections between and within our courses, and explore ideas for scaffolding.
