We will reconsider the texts we use with beginning readers to clear up some confusion about decodable texts in light of the science of reading research, and see where these tools fit within the larger literacy block. The Curriculum, Assessment, and Instructional Technology (C.A.I.T.) Council meets monthly to discuss district technology planning and implementation in order to support curriculum and instructional practices to improve student learning. 12. Managing the First Six Weeks of the Special Areas Classroom: Art, Music, PE, Library

Calling all special area teachers of Art, Music, Physical Education, and Library! The start of a new school year could bring both excitement and anxiety. Managing student behavior outside of the general classroom could pose unique challenges for special area teachers. Veteran educators have found that laying a firm foundation at the beginning of the school year is the key to a successful school year. Specifically, the first six weeks are the most critical to setting a positive and productive learning environment. In this collaborative session, we will discuss creating norms, routines, and positive relationships that will set the tone for the entire school year. Let's support our PreK-3 teams in reference to NYSED's Science of Reading attestation. Districts are invited to send a 3-4 person team in 4 in-person sessions on September 17th, October 23rd, January 15th, and March 12th. We will use each district's NYSED attestation document to reflect on current literacy practices and identify areas of strength and growth.

This Think Tank will provide a collaborative support network for districts to reflect, research, and share strategies. Each session will focus on an aspect of the Prekindergarten-3rd Grade Literacy Instructional Best Practices Guide, including the newly added writing component, and form district-specific action plans. Let's come together to confidently and expertly implement engaging and research-based literacy instruction across Dutchess County.

30. Teaching ELLs in the School Library: The Dynamic Duo Sequence for ENL Teachers & School Librarians

This professional learning workshop series is open to all school librarians in the Hudson Valley Region as well as Ulster, Sullivan BOCES School Library System, and the Hudson Valley Regional Bilingual Education Resource Network (HV RBERN). School Librarians and ENL teachers will collaborate to provide learning opportunities and resources for ELLs and their communities. We invite all school librarians to attend together with ENL teachers as a team for all sessions. In this course, school librarians will expand their repertoire of resources and strategies for supporting English Language Learners (ELLs) in the school library. The course will explore topics such as library collections, translation tools, and the physical library environment. As a final assessment, participants will examine recent "Dynamic Duo” projects-collaborations between local school librarians and ENL teachers-and use them as a springboard to begin planning their own projects.

31. What Really Matters with the Speaking & Listening Standards and the Science of Reading Research

The ability to communicate in diverse ways and with diverse audiences is one way the NYSED Literacy Briefs define literacy for today and tomorrow. We need students to engage in multiple talk structures to realize research-based practices in our classrooms.
A key component to getting ready to comprehend text read aloud is being able to activate and build knowledge through talk. In this workshop, we will: Plan for a high-level of student-teacher interaction via the use of questioning Understand the art of the read-aloud as a foundation for thinking, talking, and writing Utilize curriculum guides to identify what students know and can do in terms of oral language Expand a student's ability to use oral language to share their thinking Assist students in developing the concept of pacing as a way to engage their listeners.

62. Inquiry Driven Social Studies: Designing Compelling Questions

63. reLET: Recertification of Lead Evaluators of Teachers

This half-day workshop for lead evaluators of teachers is designed to promote quality and consistency in teacher evaluation in accordance with Education Law 3012-d. Participants will view video(s) of instruction, collect objective, representative evidence, align evidence to the district approved rubric, and discuss conclusions about teaching and learning with colleagues. District administrative teams are encouraged to attend as a group. The workshop content has been adjusted for the 2025-26 school year.

64. Transition Assessment: Part 2 - Using Transition Assessment Results Throughout the Individualized Education Program (IEP)

The focus of this training is to:
1. Learn to incorporate transition assessment results into the IEP

Participants are asked to bring a student's IEP (age 15+) to the training to have the opportunity to reflect on their district's transition practices.

Participants will receive helpful resources and a variety of assessments that can be administered to students for quality, individualized IEP development.

The Curriculum, Assessment, and Instructional Technology (C.A.I.T.) Council meets monthly to discuss district technology planning and implementation in order to support curriculum and instructional practices to improve student learning. 68. Literacy Across the Curriculum: Science, History, Math, and ELA

This series will focus on cross curricular connections through reading and writing in the classroom setting. Participants will create hands-on activities for children to analyze science literature, evaluate data, and create claim-evidence arguments, and foundations for reasonings. This session will focus on the depth of knowledge through higher order thinking and higher level questioning to expand students vocabulary, writing, and research skills for all grade levels. Teachers will focus on high impact instructional strategies by considering the convergence of fiction with nonfiction in order to draw comparisons, engage in deeper learning, and explore research interests of students. Teachers will align NYS Anchor Standard Reading 9, Writing 2 & 3 with Essential Questions. By using whole-group read alouds, essential questioning, comparing and contrasting, and peer assisted learning strategies (PALS).

Session 1 - Teachers will develop cross curricular, fiction/nonfiction units for Science (Animals, Plants, Astronomy, Cooking) History (biographies, transportation, inventions), Math (fractions, geometry), and Language (homonyms, synonyms, morphology, poetry, alliteration) S

Session 2 - Having read widely and deeply in science, history, math and ELA teachers will develop a personal inquiry-based path of learning for developing additional questions and resources for students to collect additional information on a chosen topic.

Session 3 - As teachers guide students toward developing their own content, they will guide students toward writing informational text using facts, evidence, and data to support their claims.

69. SLS Advisory Council Meeting

73. Overview of Specially Designed Instruction (SDI) (Synchronous)-Two Zoom Sessions of 3 hours each

Audience: special education teachers, general education teachers, and other educational professionals in need of training on the basic essentials of SDI for students with disabilities.

The Overview of Specially Designed Instruction professional development training package is the first in a suite of trainings on the development and use of specially designed instruction (SDI) for students with disabilities. This introductory training is intended to develop participants' working knowledge of the components of SDI, the rationale for using SDI, using SDI alongside other instructional strategies, and selecting appropriate SDI based upon student needs and characteristics. This is a two-part online course offered synchronously. Each session will be 3 hours from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. The dates are Tuesday, October 7, 2025 and Thursday, November 13, 2025.

75. Year 1: Developing High Functioning MTSS Teams

Dutchess BOCES is providing year long support to build New MTSS teams or expand existing ones for District or Building Teams. MTSS is a systemic, evidence-based, continuous improvement framework that utilizes a comprehensive continuum of evidence-based practices to support needs: academic behavioral, social- emotional, student physical and mental health. Data-based instructional decision-making is informed through regular observation such that all learners are supported and have equitable access to a rigorous, high quality education from P-12.

Teams will build a common knowledge and vocabulary around MTSS-i and its tiers, and have time to discuss and design an initial MTSS-i plan outlining the building/district expectations for implementation of each level.

77. Fake News vs. Misinformation and Disinformation: Teaching Information Literacy in the School Library

When students are given academic research assignments, it may be a challenge to identify source material that is credible, factual, and peer-reviewed. In today's polarized political landscape, public opinion has shifted considerably thereby creating a more pronounced challenge for even the most savvy students to ascertain the difference between fact, embedded opinion, yellow journalism, fake news, misinformation, and disinformation in nonfiction, informational texts. In this session both you and your students will learn various strategies and criteria for identifying and evaluating online information that is intentionally designed to misguide and/or misinform researchers.

78. DASA (Dignity for All Students Act)

This six-hour course meets all of the requirements needed for NYSED certification and certification updates for teachers, administrators, coaches, and teaching assistants. The DASA law was passed by NYS in 2010. This law seeks to provide the State's public elementary and secondary school students with a safe and supportive environment free from discrimination, intimidation, taunting, harassment, and bullying on school property, a school bus and/or at a school function.

82. Integrated ENL Co-Teaching - 3-Part Series

Program: Educational Resources

Audience: ENL and content area co-teaching partnerships, dually certified ENL and content area teachers

Dates: 10/9/2025 to 12/11/2025

This series will help co-teaching pairs to understand, plan for, and successfully implement Integrated ENL Co-Teaching in their content area classes. This series will discuss the NYS Co-Teaching Topic Briefs and reference the book Co-Teaching for English Learners: A Guide to Collaborative Planning, Instruction, Assessment, and Reflection by Maria Dove and Andrea Honigsfeld.

Session 1 will focus on building co-teaching relationships, culturally responsive sustaining education, and instructional strategies.
Session 2 will focus on co-planning practices and routines, assessment and writing language and content objectives.
Session 3 will focus on co-teaching models.

Opportunities for implementation of the practices and strategies will be embedded throughout the series. Classroom and state testing accommodations for ELLs will also be covered.

We strongly recommend that ENL teachers attend this series with one co-teacher to allow pairs to strengthen their relationship and dedicate time within each session to planning upcoming units and lessons that they will co-teach together. Dually certified ENL and content area teachers are also encouraged to register.

83. Using Phenomena to Support Inquiry in the Science Classroom

Anchoring your science teaching in phenomena is a great way to support students in developing the sensemaking and three dimensional thinking skills that they need. The New York State Education Department (NYSED) presented its robust timeline and implementation plan aimed at transforming education in New York, aligning with the recommendations from the Blue Ribbon Commission on Graduation Measures. This initiative, designed to promote greater equity within the education system, is informed by extensive stakeholder engagement, including parents, educators, administrators, school support staff, representatives of higher education, and the business community.

96. Understanding by Design: Performance Based Assessments in Lieu of Regents Exams

With changes to graduation requirements on the horizon, teachers will need to look to alternative forms of assessment to traditional tests and quizzes. In this three day workshop series, educators will explore how to apply the principles of Understanding by Design by Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe to create performance-based assessment tasks. Participants will learn to work backward from desired learning outcomes, align assessments with essential understandings, and design performance-based assessment tasks that authentically measure student mastery. Participants will apply the framework to a unit that they are going to teach later in the year.
