2. Effective Skills & Strategies For Substitute Teachers

Meeting Times: 3/7, 3/14, 3/21; 4:30 PM - 8:30 PM; 5/23; 4:30 PM - 7:30 PM

This course is designed for kindergarten through Grade 12 certificated teachers who are currently working as substitutes or wish to pursue positions as substitutes - long or short term. The content will focus on proven professional management skills and teaching strategies which substitutes need for success. Participants will explore current topics such as: instructional strategies, behavior management, effective communication, understanding student differences, current brain research, and confidentiality. This is designed to be a dynamic, interactive workshop where the participants will be able to adapt the content to their styles and needs. Note: The last class will be two months after the third class.

The focus of this course for preschool, kindergarten, and childcare providers will be the creation of a positive learning environment that balances kindness (to show respect for the student) with firmness (to show respect for the teacher). Teachers will study (and have as a later resource) Dr. Jane Nelsen's book: Positive Discipline for Childcare Providers. Participants will be taken by video into classrooms where Positive Discipline is utilized in preschools and will have an opportunity to conduct a class or family meeting to assess the methods. Problems specific to younger children will be addresses in a literature circle type setting. Includes material fee for $35.00 which includes the textbook and other materials which will be mailed out a few days before class.

This 3-credit online course is designed to improve academic performance, increase productivity, and encourage self-esteem in students through appropriate use of classroom management techniques and motivational strategies in the class. The participant will become acquainted with the various personality profiles, including their own, and strategies to encourage an atmosphere conducive to the students' ultimate learning ability. This online course is especially designed for teachers instructing students in grades pre-school through grade 12. The focus of the class will be to create a setting that motivates both the teacher and the students to become "marinated" in good books. Each participant will develop an alphabet book designed around a topic that they want to explore in more depth with the students (i.e. PSSA Terms from A-Z) or a Readers Theatre script. Graphic organizers will be presented for extending reading and writing activities along songs and book teasers. Some projects will be created. In addition, participants will explore literacy websites and research articles.
