In this hands-on, full-day workshop, elementary and middle school educators will explore the power of number strings and the open number line as essential tools for developing students' number sense and mental math strategies. We'll begin with dot talks, engaging in dynamic discussions to reveal how simple visual representations can spark deep mathematical thinking and enhance understanding. As we progress, you'll learn how to use the open number line to build fluency in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division through mental math strategies. By linking each operation to the number line, students will see relationships between numbers and gain a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts beyond rote calculation, all the while building confidence and strong math identities. In the morning we will dive deep to internalize the mathematics and the different representations. In the afternoon, participants will focus on applying the learning to their own classrooms with time to develop lessons and practice implementing them.
