Program: Teacher Center Catalog

Audience: All teachers and administration

Dates: 4/21/2025

Wait List
The Anxious Generation Book Study Due to the overwhelming response we have added a second section for this Book Study that will run from April 20- June 1. The Anxious Generation delves into a generation-defining investigation into the collapse of youth mental health in the era of smartphones, social media, and big tech- and outlines a plan for a healthier, freer childhood. After more than a decade of stability or improvement, the mental health of adolescents plunged in the early 2010s. Rates of depression, anxiety, self-harm, and suicide rose sharply, more than doubling on many measures. In The Anxious Generation, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt lays out the facts about the epidemic of teen mental illness and investigates the nature of childhood, including why children need play and independent exploration to mature into competent, thriving adults. Haidt shows how the "play-based childhood” was wiped out by the arrival of the "phone-based childhood” in the early 2010s. He presents more than a dozen mechanisms by which this "great rewiring of childhood” has interfered with children's social and neurological development, covering everything from sleep deprivation to attention fragmentation, addiction, loneliness, social contagion, social comparison, and perfectionism. Most importantly, Haidt issues a clear call to action. He proposes four simple rules that might set us free. He describes steps that parents, teachers, schools, tech companies, and governments can take to end the epidemic of mental illness and restore a more humane childhood.

The Therapeutic Crisis Intervention for Schools (TCIS) training program for child and youth care staff presents a framework for implementing a crisis and management system that reduces the need to rely on high-risk interventions. The TCI framework complements the Response to Intervention (RTI) approach and also includes aspects of trauma-informed care. Staff who are trained in the TCI program are provided a crisis prevention and intervention model designed to teach staff how to help children learn constructive ways to proactively diminish crisis and also support students and staff to react to a crisis. The skills, knowledge, and professional judgment of staff in responding to crises are critical factors in helping young people learn constructive and adaptive ways to deal with frustration, failure, anger, rejection, hurt, and depression. Program objectives include learning to proactively prevent and/or de-escalate a potential crisis situation with a child or young person, manage a crisis situation in a therapeutic manner, and if necessary, intervene physically in a manner that reduces the risk of harm to children and staff and process the crisis event with children and young people to help improve their coping strategies. Upon completion, this training will certify the attendee in Levels I & II certification.

Attendance is required for all four days to receive certification.

Lunch will be on your own on 7/7, 7/8, and 7/9. Lunch will be provided on 7/10.

Guided by the principles of the Inquiry Design Model (IDM), this three-day professional learning experience will bring together K-12 social studies educators in the Genesee Valley Region to collaboratively identify, evaluate, and curate historical sources aligned with the New York State K-12 Social Studies Framework. Throughout the session, educators will explore what makes an effective primary or secondary source for student engagement and historical thinking, considering accessibility, relevance, and inquiry-driven learning. Participants will work to align historical materials with compelling and supporting questions, ensuring they serve as rich foundations for inquiry-based instruction. This experience will also emphasize how historical sources can be leveraged to support performance- and project-based learning, helping students engage in meaningful, real-world applications of history that go beyond traditional assessments. By incorporating these sources into inquiry-driven projects, students can develop critical thinking skills, analyze multiple perspectives, and construct their understanding of historical events. The ultimate goal of this collaboration is to create a digital repository of 10-15 high-quality primary and secondary sources that teachers at all levels can implement in their classrooms for the 2025-2026 school year and beyond. This resource will help educators integrate historical inquiry into their teaching while enhancing deeper student engagement through authentic learning experiences.
