27. A Healthy Classroom

Program: Teacher Center Catalog

Audience: All

Dates: 8/17/2026

Healthy Classroom is designed to help us understand the hardest management situations the teacher faces - when the teacher has to grapple with both the individual and the class at the same time. While teaching the entire class, the teacher often has to quickly assess what to do with an individual student who is inappropriate. Just as troublesome is the situation when the teacher is reprimanding an individual student and the whole class is watching. A Healthy Classroom tackles these group dynamic situations with insight and practical axioms (from Grinder Website).
A Healthy Classroom provides educators with guidelines for recognizing patterns of classroom dynamics and knowing when to intervene to create an awareness of classroom culture. The course will focus on the larger picture of how teacher interactions with individual students impact the classroom as a whole. "A Healthy Classroom proposes that education needs classrooms that are managed by influence instead of power.” pg. 4 (summarized from Grinder Website)

"Help - My students can't write!” This familiar challenge continues to surface across grade levels and content areas. While writing performance has long been a concern, many educators have not had access to a clear, structured approach for addressing it in daily instruction. This session builds on the foundation of The Writing Revolution (TWR), also known as the Hochman Method, and reflects updated thinking aligned to current expectations for writing across disciplines. Participants will explore a cohesive set of explicit writing strategies designed to improve student outcomes. These include sentence-level strategies, single and multi-paragraph outlines (SPO & MPO), and approaches to summarization, note-taking, and annotation. While TWR is not a program or curriculum, it provides a practical framework of instructional methods that support clear, structured writing aligned to content learning and current NYSED priorities. In Part 1, participants will examine core principles of explicit writing instruction and engage with a selection of high-impact sentence-level strategies grounded in writing research. In Part 2, participants will extend this work into paragraph and multi-paragraph structures, with a focus on organizing ideas, supporting analysis, and planning extended written responses across content areas.

Registered participants will receive a copy of The Writing Revolution 2.0 for extended use.

The Holocaust Educator Network (HEN) is a free professional-learning opportunity made possible through a generous donation from Temple Emanu-El of Batavia, NY. The network is committed to building a collaborative community of educators in the Genesee region, dedicated to promoting accurate and impactful Holocaust scholarship in schools. Our mission is to honor the memory of the Holocaust, empower students with historical understanding, and inspire them to become engaged citizens who stand against hate and work toward a more just and compassionate world. To support this mission, the Holocaust Educator Network offers annual professional development opportunities for educators and administrators, focusing on the effective integration of Holocaust education into the classroom. In line with the 2022 New York State mandate, school districts are required to ensure Holocaust education is accurately represented in curricula. This initiative helps educators meet this requirement while also aligning with Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) principles, emphasizing the human and ethical dimensions of Holocaust education. To facilitate this work, the School Improvement Team, in partnership with various organizations, will organize three full-day sessions each year, each centered on a specific Holocaust-related theme. These sessions are designed to equip educators with the knowledge, resources, and instructional strategies necessary to bring these critical lessons back to their schools and classrooms.

"Children learn through play, but play is most powerful when teachers intentionally guide the learning within it.” - David Elkind

This professional-learning session explores how intentional literacy centers in primary classrooms can strengthen foundational reading skills while maintaining the engagement and curiosity that young learners naturally bring to play. Grounded in the New York State Next Generation Learning Standards for English Language Arts and aligned with current research on the Science of Reading, this session highlights how purposeful play within structured centers can support the development of phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, oral language, and comprehension. Participants will examine how well-designed literacy centers move beyond "busy work” and become instructionally aligned opportunities for practice, application, and discovery. Through modeled examples, educators will explore how center activities can reinforce explicit instruction delivered during whole-group or small-group lessons. The session emphasizes the importance of clear routines, targeted learning goals, and carefully selected materials so that centers provide meaningful repetition of key literacy skills. Educators will also analyze how play-based tasks-such as word-building games, storytelling stations, dramatic play tied to texts, and collaborative language activities-can strengthen students' understanding of sounds, letters, and language structures. These experiences help children connect decoding, vocabulary, and comprehension while maintaining the joyful engagement that supports sustained learning in early childhood classrooms.

School districts are responsible for ensuring that each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP) is reasonably calculated to enable meaningful educational progress. One effective way to evaluate the quality of IEP development and implementation is through an Educational Benefit Review (EBR)-a structured process that uses a random sample of IEPs to examine both procedural compliance and the extent to which the IEP is designed to support student progress.

During this half-day learning experience, participants will explore the principles of educational benefit and learn the Educational Benefit Review process. Through guided activities and authentic examples, participants will examine present levels of performance, measurable annual goals, specially designed instruction, services and supports, and progress monitoring to determine whether an IEP is reasonably calculated to enable appropriate progress. Participants will leave with practical strategies and tools to strengthen IEP development, support continuous improvement, and improve outcomes for students with disabilities. This session is appropriate for special education teachers, administrators, related service providers, school psychologists, and CSE members seeking to strengthen both compliance and instructional practice.
