The K-3 Reading Apprenticeship Model is a unique professional development model that supports primary reading teachers with the knowledge, skills, best practices and on-site support in teaching all students to be skilled readers and writers. "Women & the American Story (WAMS) is the flagship education initiative of The New York Historical Center for Women's History, designed to connect educators with resources that illuminate women's contributions to the American past. At a time when only 13% of the historical figures in American history textbooks are women, the WAMS website is the first comprehensive, digital women's history resource for schools across the country. While primarily a US history curriculum, it includes highlights on women in the arts and in STEM, as well as arts-integration lessons, in each of the units. This workshop will introduce teachers to the rich resources of WAMS through hands-on, inquiry-based learning, and provide them with resources and pedagogy for their own classroom practice. Teachers will leave with a set of resources to diversify their curriculum and increase the representation of women in their lessons. This session will provide an overview of the root causes of absenteeism and how to address those chause through a multi-tiered approach. Writing is one of the most complex topics we teach in school. It requires students to combine their reading comprehension skills with their executive functioning and self-regluation skills. This session will provide participants with an overview of the science of writing along with evidence-based strategies that can be used at the tier 1 level. Assessing and supporting English Language Learners can be challenging for teachers and students. As English language learners in grades K-12 acquire English, there needs to be appropriate and valid measures in place when assessing their progress.
