3. Year 1: Developing High Functioning MTSS Teams

Dutchess BOCES is providing year long support to build New MTSS teams or expand existing ones for District or Building Teams. MTSS is a systemic, evidence-based, continuous improvement framework that utilizes a comprehensive continuum of evidence-based practices to support needs: academic behavioral, social- emotional, student physical and mental health. Data-based instructional decision-making is informed through regular observation such that all learners are supported and have equitable access to a rigorous, high quality education from P-12.

Teams will build a common knowledge and vocabulary around MTSS-i and its tiers, and have time to discuss and design an initial MTSS-i plan outlining the building/district expectations for implementation of each level.

5. SLS: A Dynamic Duo: ENL Teachers & School Librarians

Program: School Library System

Dates: 10/29/2025 to 5/27/2026

This professional learning workshop series is a collaboration between Ulster BOCES, Sullivan BOCES, and Dutchess BOCES School Library Systems, and the Hudson Valley Regional Bilingual Education Network (HV RBERN). It is designed to promote teamwork between ENL Teachers and School Librarians from the same school or district. School Librarians and ENL Teachers should register to attend together as a team for all sessions.

Participants will collaborate to develop an event or initiative for ELLs that includes literacy components and recognition of student achievements. Participants will be provided with strategies and support to develop a strong foundation for a successful partnership.

Session 1

Newcomers to the series: (October 29th, Full Day, 9am-2pm, In Person)

The morning session will include introductory presentations and activities designed to give participants a better understanding of each other's roles, as well as strategies to develop a successful partnership. The afternoon session will include highlights of recent Dynamic Duo events, a discussion of funding and family engagement resources, and prep time to begin collaborative work.

Returning partnerships: (October 29th, Half-Day, 12pm-2pm, In Person)

An afternoon working session will include highlights of past participants' work, discussion of funding and family engagement resources, and prep time to begin collaborative work.

Session 2 (January 28th, Full Day, 9am-2pm, In Person)

Working session for all teams to continue developing their plans. Participants will engage in a feedback activity and receive support from SLS and RBERN staff.

Session 3 (May 27th, Full Day, 9am-2pm, In Person)

Participants will review and share their experiences and discuss ideas for continues collaboration with their partners.

6. ABC Data tracking

Fractions form the great mystery of the universe for too many students and impact their performance in the upper grades. 8. Social Stories

Social Stories are short stories using words and pictures to explain social situations, expected behaviors, and social cues to people with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and other individuals who struggle with social understanding. In this session we will discuss and model some core strategies from the Science of Learning as they are applied to mathematics: Spaced Repetition, Interleaving, Metacognition, Retrieval Practice, Elaboration, Dual Coding and Concrete Examples. Year 2: Developing High Functioning MTSS Teams During the second year of support, teams will convene twice during the year to share successes, ask questions of other teams, review implementation data, and revise their implementation as needed. 12. Science of Reading Fundamentals Microcredential through SUNY New Paltz

The Science of Reading Fundamentals microcredential (SoRF MC) is a fully asynchronous online, non-credit microcredential delivered in the learn.newpaltz platform.
It is designed for practicing P-12 teachers and others interested in learning about the research-based building blocks of reading instruction. The SoRF MC covers the five pillars of the Science of Reading -- phonemic awareness, phonics (including alphabetic principle and orthography), fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. The microcredential can be completed in as little as seven weeks or as long as six months. NYS teachers can receive 35 CTLE hours upon completion.

Participants will have up to 6 months from the start date to complete all work.

This training helps administrators gain a greater understanding of what the Science of Reading has determined to be the foundational skills needed to become a proficient reader. Participants will explore current instructional practices in reading and the impact they have on reading proficiency. The training will also provide context for the importance of effective reading instruction and the impact that it has on equity for all students. To overcome equity barriers, school leaders need to support educators in utilizing systemic, explicit instruction to teach the skills supported by the science of reading. This training also highlights ineffective practices and why those may not be working; this is intended to inform leadership support of teachers implementing research-based and effective reading instruction.

19. Strategies for Student Engagement in Secondary Math

This 3 hour, in-person session will provide math teachers with strategies to increase student engagement. Across the state, math teachers are reporting that students are not engaging in class the way that they used to. When students do engage, it is often clear that they have large gaps in understanding. Those two issues are linked. Participants of this workshop will leave with practical strategies to help students lock-in and learn in a secondary math classroom.

The Dutchess BOCES School Library System Advisory Council meets quarterly to recommend policy, review the annual budget, and perform long-range and short-range planning, including overseeing the development of the system's Plan of Service. 21. Trauma-Informed Practices: Trust and Transparency

Individuals who have experienced toxic stress and/or trauma often struggle to trust others, accept support, and/or take risks in learning. This may be true for our students, staff and/or families/caregivers. This workshop uses the UPLIFT framework and emphasizes how effective communication and a commitment to transparency and inclusion in decision-making are essential in establishing a school climate that supports all individuals in the system (e.g., students, staff and families). Discussion will focus on how to build a culture of trust, authenticity, and honesty. Particular emphasis will be on identifying communication and relationship-building strategies that facilitate productive problem-solving during courageous or difficult conversations. When we experience compassionate and dependable relationships, we re-establish trusting connections with others that foster healing and growth. This workshop will focus on actions and practices that school leaders and staff utilize to build schools and relationships that prioritize trust and transparency.

22. Algebra Tiles: Hands On Secondary Math

In this 3 hour workshop, teachers will learn how to use algebra tiles to develop students' understanding of algebraic procedures and thinking. Teachers will learn how to use these routines to move students through a concrete -> pictorial -> abstract progression with time to consider how they could be used in participants' own classrooms.

This training package empowers educators to understand and effectively manage the conflict cycle of behavior. In this one-day training, participants will ground themselves in a common understanding of the phases of acting-out behavior and how to effectively manage unexpected social, emotional and behavioral situations in the classroom. Participants will learn to recognize and respond to acting-out behavior with de-escalation strategies tailored to each phase of the acting-out cycle. Equipped with this knowledge, educators will build their toolbox of techniques aimed at fostering a safer and more conducive learning environment that increases instructional time and improves student performance.
The SLS Annual Joint Conference, Empire Educators: School Libraries & Instructional Excellence, is a dynamic professional learning conference dedicated to elevating librarianship and teaching practice. The issue of in and out-of-school suspensions of all students, including students with disabilities, who demonstrate escalated classroom behavior, has become controversial and divisive leaving many staff members at odds. 79. 2026 Banned Books Symposium

This half-day conference will feature presentations in all capacities of banned and challenged books and programs. The event includes two breakout sessions with a choice of presentations from academic, school and public librarians followed by lunch and the keynote speaker. The cost per person is $25. Individuals who have experienced toxic stress and/or trauma often struggle to trust others, accept support, and/or take risks in learning. This may be true for our students, staff and/or families/caregivers. This workshop uses the UPLIFT framework and emphasizes how effective communication and a commitment to transparency and inclusion in decision-making are essential in establishing a school climate that supports all individuals in the system (e.g., students, staff and families). Discussion will focus on how to build a culture of trust, authenticity, and honesty.
