1. Professional Development Mentor Program (Offered by the Westchester TC Institute)

Audience: Teachers in Grades K-12

Whether you are currently a mentor teacher or would like to serve in this role in the future, this year-long program will provide you with the knowledge and expertise needed to become a skilled mentor. We will examine attitudes, skills, and components of a successful program and focus on teacher development, including how to guide, support, and nurture novice teachers. This course is only open to teachers from the Edith Winthrop Teacher Center and the Teacher Center of Central Westchester. In addition to the summer seminar, there will be two follow up meetings, one in the Fall and one in the Spring from 4-6pm. There will be an additional 5 hours of course work completed online. YOU MUST BE PRESENT FOR EVERY IN-PERSON SESSION AND COMPLETE ALL ONLINE COURSEWORK IN ORDER TO RECEIVE THE FULL CREDIT FOR THIS COURSE.

Aug 29, Day 1 - Participate in a Poverty Simulation Volunteer orientation followed by a 3 hour Poverty Simulation Experience. Experience one month of poverty comprised of four 15-minute weeks. In the debrief, you will reflect and share insights. This program is designed to create a deeper understanding and awareness of the circumstances of individuals who are living in poverty and will serve as an opportunity to begin a dialogue about the often unseen world of poverty and its implications for communities and our schools. Appreciation lunch provided.

Aug 30, Day 2 - The second day of Poverty Simulation Experience facilitator training will allow participants to become familiar with the components of the Missouri Community Action Poverty Simulation (CAPS) kit and the facilitation process for conducting an efficient and effective simulation. This professional learning experience will help participants effectively utilize the simulation to increase poverty literacy. Lunch included Day 2.

Participants must attend both days. Approval required by Rockland Teachers' Center to participate in this two day facilitator training.
