23. Gracious Space: A Practical Guide for Working Better Together

Program: School Improvement

Audience: Teachers, leaders, facilitators, coaches

Dates: 8/10/2021

Developed by the Center for Ethical Leadership in Seattle, Washington, Gracious Space has been proven a highly effective way to foster authentic dialogue and facilitate lasting relationships to help people work better together and move past "stuckness" in times of complexity and change. From the Primer on Gracious Space by Patricia Hughes, "Gracious Space is a safe emotional environment that enables groups to work better together. It has been described as a "special ingredient" that makes everything better- whether a planning process, performance review, strategic plan, community change project or family discussion." Developing shared leadership for transformational and sustainable change requires a space that can hold relationships and the work in all of its complexity. Groups need a supportive structure that supports the time and environment to build trust, learn to work together in new ways, develop shared purpose and plans and take action. This workshop will offer an overview of the four elements of Gracious Space, how to cultivate them and why it matters. As we enter a new school year following a COVID school year, these spaces are more important than ever.

Research from Australia, the UK, and the Netherlands found that there are positive long-term effects of office plants. Collaboration is messy work, sometimes. We assume we can bring people together and magical things will happen! We all know this is not always the case. In fact, it is often not the case at all. How do we begin to reflect on and grow our own emotional intelligence and that of team members so that we can move forward intentionally with our work in the interest of those we serve? Let's explore the Rumble Process. Brene Brown says, "A rumble is a discussion, conversation, or meeting defined by a commitment to lean into vulnerability, to stay curious and generous, to stick with the messy middle of problem identification and solving, to take a break and circle back when necessary, to be fearless in owning our parts, and, as psychologist Harriet Lerner teaches, to listen with the same passion with which we want to be heard." This module will offer an overview of the process and opportunities for reflection. For further support, reach out to Liane Benedict, who can facilitate your team through this process more deeply. Content available June 15th.

Program: School Improvement

Once you register, Liane will follow up to schedule your sessions, each of which will be approximately 30-45 minutes. This can be done in person (preferred) or virtual if distance is an obstacle. The model of coaching used is Cognitive Coaching with Mindfulness as a supportive frame. Cognitive Coaching℠ is a model that supports individuals and organizations in becoming self-directed, and in turn, become self-managing, self-monitoring and self-modifying. The results are stronger individuals within a team and better organizational teams overall.

Audience: Instructional Classroom Teachers

Dates: 10/12/2021 to 11/9/2021

New
CASEL's SEL Signature Practices provide a structure that promotes the essential elements of an equitable learning and working environment. How do we intentionally plan for equity of voice, inclusion and collectivism at the classroom level? By integrating the SEL Signature Practices we provide students the opportunity to develop habits that are transferable to situations within and beyond the classroom walls. Participants will engage in welcoming rituals and optimistic closures, however, the main focus will be taking a deeper dive into the engaging practices. At the heart of the SEL Signature Practices are just that--the practice! Let's be intentional with creating and sustaining consistent practices that help create the climate and culture that is so vital for optimal learning and working conditions. 49. SEL Book Club for Elementary

Program: School Improvement

Audience: Instructional Classroom teacher, librarians, counselors

Dates: 11/2/2021 to 1/13/2022

New
As SEL becomes part of our daily practice and planning, a need for content that supports SEL direct instruction has emerged. The structure of this book study requires participants to highlight texts/titles they currently use in their classrooms that lend themselves to SEL direct instruction. As a group, we will work through strategies and practices elevating how the text provides social and emotional learning for students. Nonfiction texts are welcome as a challenge for the whole group however, fiction will likely be our focus. Fiction can serve as the perfect SEL catalyst for students as our classic story arcs often demonstrate a lead character developing or illustrating emotional resilience skills through the challenges they face. Our time together will support the classroom teacher planning lessons for SEL, the librarian hosting book talks, or the counselor providing MTSS Tier 2 and 3 interventions. 50. Intentional Classroom Design for SEL

Program: School Improvement

Audience: Classroom teachers

Dates: 11/30/2021

New
As we consider our educational spaces, let's consider how the design of our spaces are conducive for social and emotional learning. Together we will explore the latest research on grouping, mindfulness corners/spaces, and even plants. Yes, plants. Research from Australia, the UK, and the Netherlands found that there are positive long-term effects of office plants. More specifically the study "found greenery significantly increases workplace satisfaction in employees (and students), heightens self-reported concentration levels, and improves perceived air quality.” Indoor plants can increase happiness, productivity, and even relieve stress which can have positive health benefits. Let's get excited about creating a welcoming educational environment. Are you out of New York State and interested in attending?
