Program: School Improvement (SIP)

Audience: All educators across content and grade levels K-8, paraprofessionals, administrators. If your district is not part of the SMART START Grant, please contact Heidi Van Woert

Dates: 12/20/2024

The most impactful use of technology you can make as a teacher is leveraging it to improve teaching practices that can be used in almost every lesson. This self-paced online module has been created to help teachers become more effective in one of these "high-leverage teaching practices": Eliciting prior knowledge. Given that people construct new knowledge by building on what they already know, helping your students elicit their prior knowledge is important to enhance their learning, no matter what topic you teach. Eliciting your students' prior knowledge will also help you better understand your students' needs and adapt your lesson if needed. Building on online materials created with the support of a grant from the National Science Foundation, we have designed a sequence of learning activities designed to help you: 1. Learn more about how to best "Eliciting Prior Knowledge”, and how to leverage specific tech tools to support this practice (estimated to take ~ 5 hour to complete) 2. Apply what you learned in your own teaching (estimated to take ~ 7 additional hours beyond your usual planning and teaching) 3. Plan how to share what you learned with other teachers (estimated to take ~ 3 additional hours) Each of the "submission required” items have been designed to help you identify implications of what you are learning for your teaching. Your responses will also serve as evidence that you have completed specific components of the module. The module facilitator will provide you with feedback on your submissions at the end of each "part” of the module.

20. Smart Start: Transforming Teaching with Technology - Sharing Student Work: (Asynchronous)

Program: School Improvement (SIP)

Audience: All educators across content and grade levels K-8, paraprofessionals, administrators. If your district is not part of the SMART START Grant, please contact Heidi Van Woert

Dates: 12/20/2024

A key tenet of social constructivist learning theories is that students can learn a lot from each other. This calls for providing students with opportunities to share and discuss their work - which may be even more important when students do not see each other in class, as it will help them stay connected with each other and their teacher. Yet, you will need to make some important decisions about how to share your students' work. These decisions include what kind of student work is most worth sharing, whether or not to make their work public, and what online tools to use for the sharing. Building on online materials created with the support of a grant from the National Science Foundation, we have designed a sequence of learning activities designed to help you: 1. Learn more about how to best "Sharing Student Work”, and how to leverage specific tech tools to support this practice (estimated to take ~ 5 hour to complete) 2. Apply what you learned in your own teaching (estimated to take ~ 7 additional hours beyond your usual planning and teaching) 3. Plan how to share what you learned with other teachers (estimated to take ~3 additional hours) Each of the "submission required” items have been designed to help you identify implications of what you are learning for your teaching. Your responses will also serve as evidence that you have completed specific components of the module. The module facilitator will provide you with feedback on your submissions at the end of each "part” of the module.
