* Explore asynchronously strategies in explicit instruction with modeling and scaffolds and in note making, advanced organizers, graphic organizers, and foldables, in order to optimize meaning-making. Information on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) has begun to be introduced in NYS to a variety of educational professionals - from early childhood through K-12. While education about ACEs is critically important, it is arguably even more paramount that education in building skills in mitigating ACEs be provided to teachers and staff. Children often spend more waking hours in school settings than they do at home. Schools work to deepen student understanding of bullying prevention, but often have staff whose interactions with students are grounded in power and control, instead of respect and the trauma principles. We know from the research that safe, stable and healthy relationships with trusted adults improve outcomes for children. This training series will ground school professionals in an understanding of ACEs, the Protective Factors Framework and healthy, respectful relationship building.

This program is fully synchronous online. (3 CTLE Hours)

The course starts with practical examples of how our minds fool us into positions of powerlessness and techniques that tap into our natural resourcefulness. The course progresses through a framework for understanding how our minds can rapidly make decisions, but also how those quick reactions often lead us into flight, fight, or freeze mindsets, whereas ideally we would think critically, innovate, and collaborate. These are the habits of mind that the course develops:
Motivation
Grit and perseverance
Creative and critical thinking
Executive function and self-regulation
Social emotional intelligence
Constructive vs destructive states of mind

This course is especially helpful for being resourceful and resilient even when things go wrong, and will provide educators and students a framework for assessing problems and opportunities, coming up with solutions, listening to how other people are framing situations, and choosing what to do next in order to start and continue down a productive path instead of endless debates, inaction, half-hearted attempts, and dead-end game plans.

Over the long term, success depends on being able to prevail despite uncertainty and unpredictable change. This doesn't happen by accident; this happens through preparing to iterate quickly and well, observing the situation with discernment, analyzing and synthesizing to devise possible solutions, selecting the beneficial options, acting in ways that add to our own abilities and knowledge while minimizing the ability of unforeseen events and opposition to derail our progress, and then modifying our actions based on results.

*Critical thinking
*Innovation
*Overcoming failure
*Decision making in complicated and complex situations
*Dealing with ambiguity
*Avoiding the traps of simplistic and urgent thinking
*Resilience
*Problem solving, design thinking, and iteration
*The differences between slow and fast problem solving and when to use each
