Program: Monroe Accountability, Assessment & Reporting Services

Audience: Middle School and High School classroom teachers, instructional coaches, and administrators

Dates: 5/21/2026

Starting Soon
Grading is one of the most personal aspects of teaching. We all want to do what's best for students, yet most of us were never formally taught how to grade. Instead, we often rely on what our colleagues do or what felt familiar from our own experiences as students. Considering a shift in grading practices can feel daunting, and even when we experiment with new ideas, it's easy to slip back into what feels comfortable.

In this virtual session, we'll take a closer look at where traditional grading practices-like letter grades and the 100 point scale-actually come from. We'll also explore alternative approaches that may better reflect what we now understand about learning, growth, and student motivation. Whether you are just beginning to think about making some changes in your own classroom or are seeking information to better equip yourself when speaking with colleagues and parents, participants will leave with a clearer sense of how alternative grading practices can more effectively support student learning. .

Note: This session is a benefit of MAARS Core Services, so there is no charge for for educators from the 19 component districts within the Monroe One and Monroe 2-Orelans BOCES.

Semmer Session
New
Once our cohort is established is finalized, Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES will send a registration link to the SUNY New Paltz Science of Reading Fundamentals Microcredential. Each participant will complete the assigned modules through an asynchronous format, and will come together virtually at regular intervals to discuss the content of the module(s), make connections to the NYSED Literacy Initiative (including the Literacy Briefs and Instructional Best Practices Guide) and to consider implications for their own work. Why a regional Community of Practice? It's about collective growth. When educators come together in these collaborative spaces, they can engage in deep discussion around best practices, troubleshoot challenges, and reflect on the impact of their professional learning. By discussing experiences and strategies, teachers can enhance their instructional techniques, positively impacting student learning outcomes. Ultimately, a Community of Practice transforms the teaching experience from solitary to shared, enriching the professional journey with collective wisdom and camaraderie. The Microcredential modules comprise 35 hours of asynchronous professional learning. Our Community of Practice Sessions will consist of four virtual sessions - a launch in July, two summer check-ins, and our final check-in/celebration in August. A suggested schedule for completion will be shared at the launch meeting. NOTE: After completion of the microcredential, participants will have the option to apply for 1 graduate credit from SUNY New Paltz at no cost.

60. Immigrant Experience Book Club Summer Edition

Program: Mid-West RBERN

Audience: All School Staff

Dates: 8/10/2026

New
Join MidWest RBERN for our summer Immigrant Experience Book Club. We will be reading After the Last Border by Jessica Goudeau. Mu Naw, a Christian from Myanmar struggling to put down roots with her family, was accepted after decades in a refugee camp at a time when America was at its most open to displaced families; and Hasna, a Muslim from Syria, agrees to relocate as a last resort for the safety of her family-only to be cruelly separated from her children by a sudden ban on refugees from Muslim countries. Writer and activist Jessica Goudeau tracks the human impacts of America's ever-shifting refugee policy as both women narrowly escape from their home countries and begin the arduous but lifesaving process of resettling in Austin, Texas-a city that would show them the best and worst of what America has to offer. After the Last Border situates a dramatic, character-driven story within a larger history-the evolution of modern refugee resettlement in the United States, beginning with World War II and ending with current closed-door policies-revealing not just how America's changing attitudes toward refugees has influenced policies and laws, but also the profound effect on human lives. This virtual 10 hour asynchronous book club will take place online July 6 - August 10, 2026. Link to course will be sent to participants prior to the start of the course. Participants must purchase their own text.
