FOCUS on supporting refugees, immigrants & newcomers. Our landscape as EL educators is rapidly changing. Come discuss these changes and the resources available to schools and families. Bring your lunch and connect with educators of English language learners. We will have a focus each meeting as well as time set aside to collaborate and talk with others who are doing what you do! The location of this meeting will be MSU's Hill Hall 301. You will receive an email containing a map and information about parking a couple of days before the event.

2. SWMELL: Immigrant families home/school liaison Connect - Spring 2025

Liaisons who work with immigrant and refugee families in public school settings can learn from each other as they connect during these virtual meetings. We will discuss resources and ideas and help our colleagues problem-solve. Bring your questions and suggestions for this time together.

3. SWMELL English Language Development Directors Advisory Team Spring 2025 - VIRTUAL

Audience: ELD Directors and Coordinators

Dates: 5/13/2025

This collaboration is for ELD directors and teacher leaders in the Southwest Region with 200 or more EL students in their districts. There will be one virtual meeting at the beginning of fall semester and one at the end of spring semester. The goal is to gather around issues of district-wide leadership, program development, and implementation of initiatives including professional development, teacher recruitment, administrative matters, etc. The topics will be up to you, and we will listen and learn from each other. We will meet via Zoom. The link will be sent to you the day before the meeting.

4. SW*MELL Summer Book Study

Dates: 7/14/2025 to 7/18/2025

In this quick and intensive one-week book study, we will dive into ways to teach reading to multilingual learners in a small group setting. We will use the book "Small Group Reading with Multilingual Learners: Differentiating instruction in 20 minutes a day", by Nancy Akhavan. We will meet from 9am-11am Monday through Friday from July 14 through July 18. Join your ELD colleagues and invite classroom and content-area teachers to build your capacity in this summer learning activity. *Please purchase the book before the book study begins. She will focus on supporting literacy for multilingual learners with content from her book "Growing Language & Literacy". The conference will begin at 8am. There will be giveaways and time for connecting with colleagues. Registration is $100 and includes a light breakfast, catered lunch, and a copy of the "Growing Language & Literacy" book.
