1. Learning to Look; Building Literacy Using Art and Objects

Learn how to build literacy and foster curiosity with the Chemung County Historical Society this fall. Learning to Look: Building Literacy through Art and Objects is a 3 hour professional development session that introduces student-centered discussion methods using art and objects. Learn how to facilitate these meaningful conversations with students and how these discussions support overall student growth in literacy and critical thinking skills. Let the collection at the Chemung County Historical Society inspire your teaching practices as you collaborate with colleagues.

2. Summer Instruction Action Research - Option 2 Afternoon Kick Off

Audience: District Summer Program instructional staff and coordinators

Dates: 5/16/2025 to 8/5/2025

Participants will develop action research plans during the initial training on May 16. Topics can be based on district-specific initiatives, data sources, or individual interest. Participants will apply their plans, collect data, and refine their instructional approaches over the course of 15 days of summer program instruction. Participants will also participate in two GST BOCES-facilitated virtual meetings: one midway through the program on July 23 to share progress and engage in collaborative solution-building; and one end-of-cycle meeting on August 5 to share research findings and discuss implications for future practice. 3 Program Requirements: 1. In-person kick-off training - May 16 (F) 8:30-11:30 a.m. or 12:30-3:30 p.m. 2. Mid-Point Virtual PLC - July 23 (W) 3:00- 4:00 p.m. 3. End-of-Cycle Virtual PLC - August 5 (T) 3:00- 4:00 p.m.

17. Interrupting Harmful Comments at School 1.0

Participants will explore and adapt the Learning for Justice Speak Up at School guide: how to respond when someone- a student, a colleague, even a parent-uses biased language or stereotypes in school. We start by creating group norms to proactively prevent harmful comments and make space for them to be interrupted. Then the facilitators model actual classroom examples demonstrating how they used the protocol: 'Interrupt, Question, Education, and Echo.' Participants evaluate the responses and consider the strengths and challenges presented. Then teachers share possibly harmful or problematic comments or remarks students might make and work with their colleagues to use the Speak Up guide to draft a possible interruption. The session closes with a role play activity and reflection. Each participant leaves with a pocket guide and at least two go to interruption or question statements for when hurtful comments occur.

32. Interrupting Harmful Comments 2.0/Intervening Against Racial Slurs: Addressing the Use of the N-Word in Schools

In this session, educators will develop strategies for effectively interrupting the use of racial slurs, particularly then-word, in school settings. We will explore the impact of these slurs on students, both when used by students of different racial backgrounds and within the Black community. Through the use of the Speak Up Protocol, participants will critique and discuss four real-world examples where the n-word was used, assessing the appropriateness of responses and interventions and considering the culturally responsive moves made to call in and create safety for all. Participants will practice how to interrupt harmful language using an anti-racist framework, moving from interrupting to educating and supporting students through thoughtful, culturally responsive conversations. This session aims to equip educators with the tools to address such incidents with confidence, while fostering a learning environment rooted in respect and equity.

This two-day course will examine the NYS Required Investigations, the released sample items, and the Performance-Level Descriptions for the Grade 5 Science Test. The Investigations are designed to evaluate the skills, practices, and thinking of fifth grade students that cannot be assessed on the written exam. During this session, all four of the new tasks will be completed and participants will take a deep dive into both the teacher and student materials that accompany the Investigations. In this offering, participants will... -explain the objectives and goals of each of the four Investigations -apply the experiences to successfully implement each Investigation in the classroom -identify the different supports and scaffolds that might be necessary for students to be successful.

76. NYS Regents Physical Science: Chemistry Required Investigations Overview (Option 1)

77. Recertification for the Observation/Evaluation of Teachers (3012-d APPR) Session 1 - Option A (In-Person)

This training is for educators who have previously participated in Lead Evaluator Training. The training will continue with all the state-prescribed components as well as implementation and management of the APPR system, the integration of state initiatives (SEL, culturally responsive-sustaining education) and instructional leadership. Attention will be paid to inter-rater agreement and reliability using your district's rubric, as well as a focus on feedback and growth-producing conversations. 

In this offering, participants will...
- examine multiple elements of the required components of the Commissioner's Regulations required for certification as a lead evaluator/teacher evaluator
- continue to reflect on their leadership styles and continue to align their practices with the Professional Standards for Educational Leadership (PSEL)
- apply best-practices for providing growth-producing feedback, and supportive relationships with those they are observing
- be provided with updates from Teacher Leaders Effectiveness SCDN
- examine connections between evaluative systems and NYSED initiatives
