The better we know and understand our students, the better we can teach them. This 15-hour asynchronous book study invites educators to explore David Brooks's How to Know a Person, a compelling examination of the skills, habits, and mindsets that deepen our understanding of others. Through reading reflections, online discussions, and practical application activities including a case study, participants will consider how Brooks's insights can transform classroom relationships, school culture, and professional practice.
Designed for busy educators, the course allows participants to engage with the material on their own schedule while connecting with peers through discussion forums and optional collaborative activities. Each module highlights key themes-such as attentive listening, moral humility, curiosity, and the art of truly seeing students-while offering strategies for fostering trust, empathy, and belonging in the classroom and school environments.
This book study is ideal for teachers, instructional coaches, counselors, and school leaders seeking practical tools to build stronger human connections and create classrooms where every learner feels known, valued, and supported. (15 CTLE hours)
